Hi Keep,
I grew my first auto's outside last summer. Started them indoors in peat pellets then put the peat ball into 4" pots once they got a few sets of leaves. I started to acclimate them to outside after about 3 weeks by moving them outside in the morning into shade for a few days and then started to allow them to get increasing amounts of sun.
I prepared their final location outside the same time I started the seeds with a mix of Promix, compost, topsoil, limestone and rock phosphate. The holes were about the size of a 5 gal bucket.
When I put them in the prepared spots I made sure they were well watered so the soil would hold together and carefully cut the pots down the side to avoid any disturbance to the roots. Filled in around the root balls with loose soil and then watered gently to make sure there were no air pockets.
The plants never missed a beat.
Good luck, I will be following along.
