Hello guys. I have read that you have to check the PH of the run off water to see if there is "fertilizer or nutrient salt build up in the growing medium which is affecting the pH at the roots" . How can I fix this problem if the ph of the run off water is different than the ph of the water I poured in ?

Lets say that i am growing in soil.

Thanks

It depends if the pH is high or low and by how much. If it's just off a little you can compensate by adjusting the pH of your feeds. If it's way off, then adding dolomite lime will raise it. That's the most common issue, low pH. If it's high, then depending on how high something like aluminum sulfate may be needed to lower it.

Probably gonna need information

Run off in and Run off out readings are how you "measure" your PH

Rough Calculation Guide:

Here's some good info on ph.....
If your runoff pH is higher than your starting pH, use this equation to determine your soil pH:*
Soil pH = Runoff pH + Difference

If your runoff pH is lower than your starting pH, us this equation:
Soil pH = Runoff pH - Difference.

For example, say your the starting pH of your solution before it goes in is 6.5 and the pH of your runoff is 7.0. The difference is +0.5, so using the above equation:
Soil pH = 7.0 + 0.5*
Soil pH = 7.5

If your starting pH is 6.5 and your runoff is 6.0, your difference is -0.5 and using the above equation:
Soil pH = 6.0 - 0.5
Soil pH = 5.5

In order to adjust your PH is another matter, but first you need to determine whether you need to or not.

I Hope this helps.
