Does a portable vaporizer use up everything you load in a single session. Or can it be loaded once and then used for single hits multiple times during a day? And if so, does it waste some of the herb when used in this fashion?

It will last as long as you still have active cannabinoids in the herb. Whether it is one session or more. Once you start to feel like the flavor is gone flat, it is probably all used up.

You can make sleeping edibles out of the remainder of the used herb as well.

But that is another story...

Thanks Eekman! So, as soon as the heat drops the herb stops releasing its payload? And that is available for later? I was worried that there would be some loss during the cooling down.

I believe you will have small losses and possibly diminished flavor but it will work!
A lot may depend on how long and hard you hit it.
I like to drop the bowl into a scoop of peanut butter and eat it, since the heat from the vaporizer decarbs it - instant edible!!
You may want to time it so the vapor peaks before the edible kicks in however

Here's something i keep reflecting on: if it's an ovenizer-based method that keeps our last noble molecules baking until final release, minutes later (...), then i got to wonder what a drop of heat is meant to spare after removing a filled balloon, for example.

I was worried that there would be some loss during the cooling down.

To me slow pre-heating inside an oven also involves "baking" and hence that's one reason why i believe instant ("flash") heat/cooling remains a more promissing option.
