hello all i am new to the autoflower grow can i get decent results planting in 1 gal pots

Yes you can but bigger pots ... 3 gal ... make bigger plants ... some grow in 1 gal pots to keep their plants small ...

i currently have have 7 seedlings under a 400 watt hps pretty good size closet all in 1 gal containers should i thin them out and go to 3 gal pots

If you've got the room you should easily be able to grow about 6 - 7 plants in 3 gallon pots under a 400 watt HPS.

Hey Jt68 every one of the Auto's I have grown indoors have been in 1 gallon pots and I have had some big ass plants. Not saying that I couldn't have had bigger with bigger pots. You can check out my grows that I have posted on here.

Also depends on the pot.....a smaller airpot is going to (from my limited experience) grow as large of a plant as a larger traditional pot (can't speak to smart pots or other bag-style) seems to me, if you want to grow medium to large plants but want to save on floor area go with 2 or 3 gallon airpots.
