I would first calibrate it following the manufacturers directions. Once you know it's calibrated properly just place it in the solution you want to check and wait until the reading stabilizes. All there is to it. When you are finished rinse it well and store. If the mfg. suggests using a storage solution I would highly recommend that you do.
