i collected some rainwater this week and I went to go pH test it with my Apera PH20 meter and got some confusing results! The meter said it’s 9.1! I went and texted the meter on some 4.0 test solution and it’s accurate. Then I did the old-school vial and solution drop test and I got about 6.7, based on the color. So, I’m not sure what to do here. I don’t think it’s possible for the solution drop test could be that far off; and when I spoke to Apera Instruments once before (about testing distilled water) they said the meter can get thrown off if there aren’t enough ions in the water. So, I’m wondering if that’s the problem here. Which results should I trust?

Here’s a picture of the test vial:

I would go with the liquid.

a digital ph pen dosnt measure ph,it measures the electrical conductiveity of solids/particals in the water, then converts that to a ph value.RO distilled de ionized and rain water dont really have tiny disolved amounts of much anything.
trust the test strips.
:pighug:

its not the strips but the solution...but as you have the pen and solution why not double check/test a few things tap water/milk/coke or whatever
:pighug:

Usually the pen and the vial jive with each other. Not today, though;l. I tested my well water and I get identical results between the pen and the vial. It’s just the rainwater that’s giving me funny results. I guess I’ll go with the vial results. I just can’t imagine rain water being that (9+) alkaline.

Thank you all!
