Can anyone explain how they came up with testing runoff for soil ph? To me it doesn't make sense and doesn't work a lot of the time for me I can get reading that say my soil is to high or too low mostly too low and my plants be health and perefectly fine. I was just wondering is the formula a ruff guess or can it be backed up?

Ps.Honestly I don't check ph anymore I grow in soil and no matter what my water that goes in is 6.5-6.7 and my plants seem to do well without ever checking my soil ph.

Rough Calculation Guide:

Here's some good info on ph.....
If your runoff pH is higher than your starting pH, use this equation to determine your soil pH:*
Soil pH = Runoff pH + Difference

If your runoff pH is lower than your starting pH, us this equation:
Soil pH = Runoff pH - Difference.

For example, say your the starting pH of your solution before it goes in is 6.5 and the pH of your runoff is 7.0. The difference is +0.5, so using the above equation:
Soil pH = 7.0 + 0.5*
Soil pH = 7.5

If your starting pH is 6.5 and your runoff is 6.0, your difference is -0.5 and using the above equation:
Soil pH = 6.0 - 0.5
Soil pH = 5.5

I'm not sure but I think the question is why the formula works not what the formula is. At least that's the way I read it. If that's the case, I have no clue. Lol, but would like to know.

Yes, I know the formula I was wondering how did it come to be because it doesn't seem to work for me, my plants do really well without reading correctly doing that formula I was wondeering is it a guess or is it actually accuate?

It's more or less a average...I believe it was put together by some one with a probe and a liquid meter...so people without a probe could figure out ruffley where there at...It's not set in stone as how it is... I strongly advise getting the PH wizard Since I started using the probe it's so simple and quick to find and combat PH issues.

Has anyone confirmed the formula to be correct when inserting a soil probe?
My coco ph is always 6.8-7 using a soil probe. My coco has a buffer doing a fine job of keeping PH neutral.
I would like to bring my coco down to 6 PH but it will not budge even with water in @ PH 4!
So I can not comment on the formula.

My plants grow OK but I wonder if PH 6 would increase my yield.

I wouldn't be feeding plant with that low of a ph. You get way better yeild at 6.4-6.7 ph I high recommended 6.5 or as close as possible.

I never worry about runoff ph.I just talked to a tech person from Gen Hydro and they said not to worry about runoff ph as long as your input water is correct.I have talked to several reps from top nute companies and they all seem to say the same thing.If your using organics theres no need to ph your intake at all.

Yes I was, I use soiless sunshine mix and still treat it like soil and get really good results. I still would not go as low as 4 in coco bring it up to 6 at least.
