Grow Mediums Sand

I have read that people have been successful using sand as a top layer to discourage and stop gnats. Is this any kind of sand? I have a bag of paver sand laying around just was not sure if that would work or if I needed a particular type.

Run some water through it and check the ph of the runoff

Run boiling water as a flush kills off eggs then use hydroton on top with Diatomaceous earth. keep a few sticky strips close.
