Hi everyone, i have a second grow thread(indoor) going on now and i asked this question but no one replied so i was hoping i can get some answers here.

I placed my seeds in between moist paper towels and placed it in a container with 3 small holes at the top. Placed the container in my closet and check to see if it sprouts daily.

But the thing is it's been 7 days and my seeds still hasn't popped. Should i put them in water ?

Anyway they were bought like 3 months ago and they were kept in the container they came with. Do you think they somehow 'expired'?

High!

Not sure am getting you well but:

1. You soak seeds for 24 hours (some go 36), till seeds fell @ th ebottom of your cup or whatever you soak your seeds in
2. Moist Paper towel for few days till tap root tail is no longer than 1 inch
or you put them straight in the soil (after soaking in water) and wait usually 3-4 days before seeing them up ( I prefer this way)

I do 1. (24 h) then straight in soil and wait 3-4 days

Hope it help, best of luck!

Peace!

I think you need a warmer spot seeds are programed to sprout in the spring when it warms up .I put a seed in between a wet paper towel and put it in a small tup container and set it on my heating duct near my furnace keeps it nice and warm it sprouted in 3 days . I don't put any holes in my container this keeps the moisture in so it rains in the container some but once it sprouts plant it or it might get funky on you if you leave it to long.

Both of the guys above gave excellent responses, one other thing to consider is, sometimes the shell or hull of the seeds are extremely resilient and need a little coaxing to get them out. If you have some sandpaper, line the inside of a small baby food jar or something like that with the sandpaper and put your seeds in. Give them a good shake against the sandpaper, that will help break the shell down some allowing some moisture to get through. I have also heard of people using a needle to poke a small hole into them with but have never tried that myself. Keep them moist and around 75F and they will sprout if they are viable. If they came from a reputable seed bank they should be absolutely fine, I have had seeds over 2 years old sprout without a problem. One thing to consider when storing them is the keep them in the fridge or freezer, sealed tightly. I put mine in mason jars.

Heres how I germ my seeds. First I use compressed jiffy pucks which I soak in a bowl of warm distilled water while I'm working on the seeds. When the pucks expand I give them a light squeeze to get out the excess water and then I poke holes into the pucks 1/4"-1/2" deep for the seeds to set into. Now heres my trick for the seeds-I do NOT soak them in water BUT I take a file and LIGHTLY file the most pronounced edge of the seed from the rounded top to the pointy end but only on the one edge.I file until I see the brown under the seed shell. From there they go direct in the pucks and into a humidity dome placed on a seed heating mat.Fastest sprout time was 12 hours, with average time of 36 hours before they pop.

Alright everyone, thanks for the help. One my seeds cracked but no taproot and it has been like this for 2-3 days and the other seed hasn't cracked yet so i placed the seed in a glass of water 4 hours ago. I gave it a light tap and it sinked immediately. It is in my closet which is warm, dark and has like 70% humid(My first grow was successful germinating in my closet using the paper towel method). Any suggestion or advices ?

Salutations KillerNecroX,

Any suggestion or advices?

There's been some good input provided already but i can offer a complement illustrated by old pictures which survived my initial subscription to AFN.

A few things evolved since then, storage in a refrigerator for starters. Distilled water worked best, also i adopted delicate paper so the microscopic vegetal fibers wouldn't suffer too much damage when the time came for transfer to a growing medium: it's quite preferable just to break paper instead...

Finally, judging from its tap-root length i'd say i should have performed this transfer 1 day earlier! By chance it picked up some healthier green tones in a matter of hours.

:peace:

It's day 8 since attempting to germinate. One of them cracked but the tail root doesn't grow out (Just able to see the seed cracked and got a black thing hanging out but doesn't expand) and another one which i transferred from paper towel method to the glass water but still hasn't cracked at all.

Do i give up hope now ? Will they even break through and have the tap roots coming out ?

I was wondering is there any good seed storage thread here ? As i said they are in their original container ever since i received them and i have been keeping them for 3 months in one of my long sleeves pocket.

Help and advices will be good. Thanks :)

Don't transfer the seeds back to the cup of water, you will suffocate the seeds as water has minimal oxygen levels that are too low to fully germinate seeds in. It's suggested by many people to keep the seed in the cup of water until you see a crack, once the seed is "cracked" you transfer to the paper medium, once the seed grows out a tap root (0.5' - 1') its transferred to its growing medium.

Here is a germination guide I posted a while ago - https://www.autoflower.org/f2/95%-success-germination-guide-26920.html

Regarding proper storage of seeds. I personally (not everyone does this) do the following:
1. If I'm storing them for less than 12 months (1 year) they'll be stored in a air-sealed plastic container with rice inside in the fridge. The rice prevents moisture from getting inside, and the fridge provides a cool environment to induce dormancy in a sense. It's always worked for me.
2. If the seed will be stored for 2-3 years. I'll be storing it air proof tubes filled with rice. Then sunk down in a container of water (small 100g piece attached to it to tie it down) then deep-frozen in a freezer. Unfreezing these seeds is complicated and isn't just a "take it out and unfreeze the ice" sort of procedure. Suggested not to do this.

I'd suggest you transfer your seeds immediately to your growing medium (soil etc..) as you're drowning the seed in the cup of water.

Let us know how things go, sending some big :karma: to you.

Thank you for that helpful post. As i said, one of my seed has cracked but has been that way for a few days without any white tap root coming out and the other hasn't cracked yet that is why i placed it into a cup of water. Do you suggest i should just place both the seeds into my growing medium ?
