Grow Room Seedlings heat mat

I have a cycle timer I use for my pumps and I use it for my seedling heat mat.

I do 5 minutes on, 5 minutes off. That way there is some warmth under them but they are unlikely to overheat.

Obviously this isn't as precise as a temp controller, but I've had good success with it so far and it might be an option if you have a timer.

Good luck!

I haven't used one yet, but I recall reading advice from others who have that the heat control is a good idea. One grower indicated that he/she had toasted some seedlings because temps got too high when ambient temps went up. At any rate, were I to use a heat mat, I would opt for one with a digital control. The key is that with the control, the temp will stay where you set it regardless of ambient temperature changes - like when a fan packs it in, or lights go out, etc. There are lots of options available on Amazon.

I don't use a grow heating pad once germed seeds are planted. I keep my tent temps nice and toasty at all times.

For germinating, I have two grow heating pads. One is a Vivosun 10x20 and I use it for germing in coco pellets. It gets a little too warm for paper towel method. Even with a towel under and on top of pad. The other, is 3x20 that I use most often germing in a shot glass and or paper towel method. I have chosen to stick with germing in a shot glass only for the foreseeable future using water/Rhizotonic. The Vivosun pads are water proof.

ADD: I germ in a closed bathroom drawer for duration.

I use the 10x20 vivosun heat mat as well. I use rapid rooters inside a Tupperware. Close lid. Place tupperware in mat on edge. I then fold over the heat mat making a heat mat sandwich with the tupperware in the middle opening lid after 24 hours letting oxygen in and check moisture let go another 24 hours. Haven't had a seed fail yet this way.

A sheet of Reflectix that fits the bottom of whatever tray I'm germinating in
provides a nice buffer if I feel that the seedling mat is a little too warm.

I use temp contols for my germ mat and my intake/exhaust fans. The mat is on 24/7 until plants are sexed...bout 3-4 wks, then moved to a bloom tent where thermo contols turn intake and exhaust on/off according to temps and or rh. Knowing and controlling temps at every stage is so beneficial and I believe aid greatly in growing my meds.
