Hey guys, great forum, lots of experienced folks on here. I'm new to all of this, but have grown veggies/herbs in the past outdoors.

I've been reading all day and snagged a recipe for soil Muddy posted that I'm going to try to replicate...sprout in Pro-Mix and then grow in pro-mix + perlite + worm castings. Going to look for Better-Gro orchid nutes to use from about week 2.5-10 and just try to have a successful small, single-plant grow. Yield, potency, fancy-shmancy 3 cola plants will come with time, I just want this thing to be healthy, small, and happy. I'm going to do 1 seed at a time so if anything goes wrong or I screw it up, I have time to re-asses, change my process, and restart another plant. Time is of no object and I'd rather not germ. 4 seeds only to lose 2 or 3 and realize the error of my ways too late.

My space is a closet, about 3'x3'x5'. The closet itself is about three times that big, volume-wise, but I only have about that much area to dedicate to this project (there's some stuff on shelves above that 5' mark and some clothes hanging in the second half of the closet). Needless to say, there will be plenty of room to get to the plant and there will be nothing to fall on it or otherwise disrupt the lifecycle, I just can't empty my whole closet 100%. I don't intend to do a grow-box or tent, just have it free-standing in a pot, on a saucer, on a tarp, on the floor. I have a couple of shelves and a clothes bar from which I can hang/suspend lighting and will have a small fan for air circulation. Temp/humidity I'm going to somewhat leave up to mother nature/my AC system. I usually keep the central air around 70-72 in the summer and the house itself stays just above that. I figure inside a closet with a lighting system it should stay a bit warmer.

The question I have pertains to lighting. I want this to be a cheap, less is more type approach, but I'm willing to buy a dedicated LED grow-light if it will really make a big enough difference in plant health. I'm planning on using a few CFLs and maybe a T-5, just enough to get good coverage and maybe a side light or two for fun. I have, however, fallen in love with the blackstar setups and think I could just do a plug-and-play 1 light setup using one of their smaller rigs.

For those that have done 1 plant micro-grows or have experience with small scale setups, would you recommend just going the extra mile and buying an LED grow-light or would the extra cost not be justified over 3 or 4 CFLs?

I'm looking at the 100W Blackstar unit right now as my first choice, it says it covers a 2cubic foot area, I can't imagine that would be insufficient for 1 small plant.

Seeds are Iranian Auto Fem., btw. Thanks for your suggestions!

Tim

As a side note, I got the recommendation from the person that supplied the seeds to flower these at 12/12, although they are "autoflower." That seemed odd to me since most of you guys are doing 20/4 or at most 18/6 with your auto strains. Any thoughts about that?

Hey man. Welcome to the forum. I'm glad that you have done some research before getting started.

I say go for the Blackstar if you can, especially because of the temps. Those things are great. The smaller one would work for one plant, but get the 240 watt if you can, you'll be ale to add a plant or two later easily.

You won't be able to keep that closet closed and get enough ventilation for temps and fresh air with out using fans. But if you are able to keep it open all the time it will probably work.
What about smell? They get stinky at some point and if that's going to be a problem you'll need something. Most of us are in enclosed spaces and use carbon filters to extract the stinky air.

I've never heard of that strain but if it is truly fully auto you don't need or want to flower them at 12/12, that will only decrease your size and yield. They will flower at any light schedule if they're auto.

Excellent plan. Squidherb is correct odor can be a problem. Some strains produce a great aroma with others it is unpleasant to the uninitiated and still others produce negligible odor. These could be absorbed into your clothing. Check out the Gt50 ionizer and the regular air cleaner with the ionizer option they will help and are not expensive. One plant in the last few weeks of flowering can overwhelm a house with its bouquet.

Hmm, that's a little worrying about the smell. I would have imagined, like any big flowering plant, there would be some odor, but the idea of it being overwhelming throughout the house is bad. I'll need to think about how that changes the plan a little...

Not at all. Just some strains are prone to the higher levels of odor. Many very experienced growers herein--will assist with a selection. For me the Bubblicious had a massive odor permeating the house--just one plant. I considered it a pleasant aroma. At harvest when you chop all plants release their characteristic aroma for a few hours. My Cream Caramel had a great coffee like aroma up until a few days ago now it is a few weeks away from harvest and has very little odor. Don't let our initial response be of great concern. One plant will be fine.

Okay, thanks Alan...I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post where I got the seeds, but they just came in the mail today. 6 days from phone order to delivery, pretty snappy for international mail. Like I said, it's an "Iranian Autoflower" variety, apparently a very hashy smoke with a predominantly Indica heritage. I figure since they're not a board sponsor I'll just leave them anonymous.

Anyway, I'm gonna give it a go and if things get out of control smell-wise, I have a spot (albeit a bad one) where I can put her outside to finish. I got 11 seeds in the packet, so if I lose one due to unforeseen circumstances, I'll call it a mulligan and regroup.

Sounds - good. Fire away with the breeder or seed bank. All will be interested in knowing the source.

hi low_and_slow , wellcome to AFN:smokebuds:great you decided to start a grow and to bring it here. i have seen these iranian autos discussed before and i'm not so sure they are true autos. + the fact that the vendor told you to flower them under 12/12 makes me believe they definitely aint autos. feel free to list the vendor and some member may be familiar with them and fill you in..... best of luck mate :smokebuds:

Dr. Greenthumb. The growing instructions they came with said to veg and flower at 18/6.
