i think it was @Margahooja or @iampepe put me on to it. kind of a early mistake that turned out to be ok. its the tiering method. cups stay. bottoms are cut out. the theory is making the roots stretch more and utilizing more space in your pot. idk. maybe we fucked it up lmao. but they are going. yes we water in and out the cups only in the cups when they were seedlings though. so save on water that way early

I do have one solo (solo cup challenge) that I put 4 1/4" holes in the bottom with one of my regular auto crosses I made in it. I have the cup sitting with a runt planted in a 5 gallon pot for the last two weeks, I tried to pick up the cup yesterday and it's firmly stuck where it is. Now I know why it's doing so well, looks like its going to be a 14-16 single cola with little kicker buds off the sides. I'll have to DQ myself from the challenge for the roots out of the cup. I just started with the solo cups late last year to help with getting a good start on keeping a perpetual garden going, it's working well using two cups per plant from the start.
