New Grower Soil recommendations???

i'd watch out for both Fox Farms Ocean Forest and Promix. Apparently if you start with them you need to do a lot of work to keep PH correct. Other composts don't seem to cause the problems these two do.

I have not had great flux in ph with Ocean Forest. Just check the PH before planting and amend with dolomite lime to raise it to the level you need if it's low. Make sure to give the soil a few weeks for the lime to break down before planting. I also don't recommend planting seedlings directly into roots or ocean forest. They have nutes in them and are too hot for some seedlings.

Exactly, i buy a bag of compost and mix with a little perlite and it's ready to use in minutes and doesn't have to be PH adjusted throughout it's life growing an auto. Others have reported different PH's per bag and having to monitor PH in those soils.

Why start a novice off on a difficult path. Isn't there a balanced soil that's on sale over there? If he was in the UK i'd recommend Plant Magic Soil.

That may work well for your needs, but many people find that too much compost is a bad thing. Most like to mix in something a lil more inert and space filling like coco or peat. I'm becoming more of a fan of coco the more i use it.

Do you use anything besides just compo and perlite? What brand of compost?

Base ingredints can change regionally from area manfactured even frm the same brand name and same looking bag
i would go w/ what region has to offer a thn from there
decide the route
if you go larger than solo cup you can wait alittle longer and trans into hotter soil as an xample how u can alter the habit of the plant

So I checked my local Lowes and the 3 choices besides miracle grow are hapi gro, garden pro, and sta green. All of which are potting soils

I do know Ocean Forest generally needs lime to buffer it out since it's low out of the bag, but my experience with Promix is spot on. When I did have issues, it wasn't because of the stability of the Ph. Since figuring it out, it's been pretty simple. Like any mix, you gotta get used to how it reacts, I just think Promix is easier. I only have experience with a handful of mixes, but they are the more popular in the States. Ocean Forest, Promix BX, Jiffy, Miracle Grow, Monrovia soils and couple other I can't recall.
