Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am sure this has been talked to death, but I am not able to find a thread on it. I know I have read threads before about it but I can't find them.

I had read that when growing Autos, anything larger than a 2 gallon was over kill as the roots don't have time to fill more than a 2 gallon.

Now I read about folks using 5 gallon or larger to grow a larger plant with more roots.

I use a 3 X 3 area with 2 gallon pots. I can fit 12 pots. Of course when they grow, I have to do some shuffling depending on who is where on the grow.

I am using 1/2 Fox Farms Happy Frog and 1/2 Botanicare Coco as the medium and Mills as my nutrients.

Current grow is fine, but am I limiting my harvest by limiting the pot size?

Seems to me, it's a question of utilized floor area. 12 smaller plants encompassing the same space as 8 slightly larger ones....break even.

It may be the case that the smaller ones need proportionally less space to "stretch their legs" so depending of the vertical propensities of
the strain it may be MORE efficient.

my 2 cents. I've seen monsters grown in 2 gal airpots

well back when the original lowryder came out, that was the key to success and with any auto it is true the bigger your pot size the bigger your plant will be I have pics of autos years and years ago filling up 5 gallon pots and actually wanting more now I have seen we have some pretty crazy autos on the market to give your plant the best chance yes I would say the bigger the pot the better but it does depend on how much room you have also because 5 gallons will grow into monsters

I call bullshit on autos not filling more than a 2 gallon pot!!! I grew out Magnums from Buddha Seeds last year, and they filled a 5 gallon smart pot!! Yes, I looked at the root mass before I got rid of the dirt. Full full full with roots top to bottom. Alot has to do with strain too. Check out post #73 in my magnum grow. If I was to do that strain again, I would do only 4 plants in 5 gallon smartpots and by the time I got to flowering, the tent would bulge like someone farted inside!!:rofl:My tent is 4x4 and 4 plants in 5 gallon smartpots will fill it!!! Now if I were to do say 5 plants of a medium yielder, I would have room to move around a bit....but not much. Try a few 5 gallon smartpots and see what happens!!! Freakin TREES!!!! BOOM!

im usng a 3x2 and I can barely fit 4 3.5 gallon pots

Yea i only do 5 gallon but I think that also has to do with that i am really old school and back in the day we would do that to discourage the dwarfs from being dwarfs sadly many times there no telling a dwarf he isn't a dwarf but the more room i have always makes me feel better lol

I guess it just depends how many plants you want to run, imo with the improved auto genetics over 5 gallon would maybe be overkill I grow my autos in 4 gallon pots and the roots always come out of the bottom. In my 3x3 tent 3 autos in 4 gallon pots makes it crowded. But I use regular pots I know u can grow monsters with smaller airports since the roots get pruned :Sharing One:

I originally used 3 gallons and I am actually doing better with the 2 gallons, but also have more experience under my belt as well as have switched from a 400W HPS to a 420W Indagro. Actually grew my photos in the 2 gallon last run and got about the same weight as I do with Autos. I was only able to fit in 4 photos even in 2 gallon pots in the same space. It will be very full with 12 auto plants in there, but it isn't bad when they are in rotation at different ages. I could have sworn I read somewhere credible that the 2 gallon pot was the standard for autos. Thanks for all the input everyone.

My cab is so small that I'll be going from one 3gal to three 2 gal airpots in an attempt to keep them shorter...running out of vertical room to stay far enough away from this Dark Devil in veg.

I have the two dark devils going and I am so excited about them! One is full of color, one isn't. It has a super funky smell!
