I getting ready to mix up my medium and just picked up 2 (1.5cu/ft) bags of Foxfarm ocean forest. Also picked up a 30lbs bag of wiggle worm, 1.5 cu/ft bag of perlite and 2 cu/ft bag of vermiculite.... In total I need 9 cu/ft for my plants and was thinking about mixing 1/3 FFOF, 1/3 worm castings and 1/3 perlite/ vermiculite/ pee gravel. Couple Question I have, is 1/3 mix of worm castings too much? The bag is a 1-0-0 rating. Also should I be using some of the Happy frog potting soil or soil conditioner? Any advice on changing it up or adding something to the mix would help me a lot. Thanks in Advance!
P.S. This will be an outdoor grow, at 8,000ft in the Colorado Rockies. Using 3 gallon pots and will be using Fox Farm trio nutes.

FFOF already contains sufficient amounts of worm castings and guano and as such is considered to be a "hot" soil mix. It is normally too hot for autos and is usually mixed with Happy Frog at a 50/50 ratio of lessen the effects and allow for better growth of young plants. At that ratio it will feed the plants for 3-4 weeks without any additional amendments or supplemental feedings. I would suggest you use the worm castings to either top dress the plants after the first month, or to make a tea to feed them with.

A word of caution about FFOF. Fox Farms has had quality control issues for the past 2 years or so and we've seen very low pH right out of the bag, sometimes as low as 4.5. I would highly recommend that you test the pH of the FFOF before use. You may find that some additional dolomite lime may be needed to raise the initial pH of the FFOF.

My advice would be just skip the FFOF and go FFHF and Perlite - 70/30 and skip the rest...other than dolomite lime and Great White Mycos.

well if your planning on doing organics that's not gonna work with the FF trio of nutes yer planning on using. you could plug your pot with a sterile seedling mix and use the soil n castings and feed them differently to utilize the foods in the mycos within the soil, cuz the chem nutes will kill em all.and lessen the effectiveness of the avaliable foods in the soil as well.Big Bloom is juust fine, but the grow big n tiger are gonna set your soil itself back.assuming your trying to be organic...?

But imo there are a few ways to go,but you dont have time to cook a soil so you could use the big bloom, get some organic Liquid kelp, molasses and keep out a gallon of casting for teas n stuff and buy an organic cal mag and one guano and some alaskan fish fert at 5-1-1.then you could mix all your stuff up maintaining the foods and mycos within the soil and helping your roots maintain a more solid structure for your higher elevation which Id think would help but dunno fer sure, but will build you a stronger root system. But thats the most basic organic way to go imo.as far as utilizing all of what you have quickly instead of using the chems.soup styled feedings.and teas too if your looking into that.

cuz in all honesty you could have gotten the perlite and a big bag of soiless mix and threw some perlite in there and just fed as ya would a chem routine.

and Im not trying to bum ya out man,not at all.I say these things cuz your in an organic section and your using two very heavy chemical feeds.the grow big n tiger bloom.so Im a little confused as to which way your trying to go man.thats all.anywho, just food for thought man.I hope yer well dude and best of luck to ya in your upcoming grow man."AFN smoke out"

Thanks for the heads up eyes! I didn't know the FF nutes were chem based. I definitely wanna stay as close to 100% organic as possible! Next year I will be cooking up my soil as I will have access to a lot of compost.... But for now will be a 50/50 mix of FFOF and FFHF. As for nutes, I would like to do the Tea method after reading this.

Yeah no problem man.I was just a little ,like, uhhh huh?! LOLthere's plenty of info on teas here and your welcome to look at my "100% organic Grow" thread under indoor growing and the more recent recipes(as in light n mild recipes)your welcome to take a look at.worked really nice for me,but I did have a living soil though. But if you amend a quality soil(Im unfamiliar with FF soil) with some things you can have a pretty decent grow imo, that is if your going all organic as best as yer able to do.Take it easy man n have fun."AFN smoke out""AFN smoke out"

I would stay away from FF all together imo =/ Being a new grower, I had nothing but issues with it. From it being too hot, to PH issues, rocks and other stuff in the soil. Even when I ran just HF and perlite, my white widow still had signs of nute burn. I will never use FF soil again.

Dam its seems like I'll cut down the FFOF/ FFHF with some really good top soil/ native soil from up here. One of my sites is at a friends property, ( 10 acre) where we are also doing a big veggie garden, and a Quinoa crop. I've tested the soil and the PH is 6.5 and good mineral content. Nice dark soil that is around a couple natural sprigs and is considered a part wetland area.

Too little too late for this one, but if I read it right he’s not using the liquid trio of FF, just the soil. I thought the Ocean Forest was organic but I’d have to look at the ingredients again.
