I use Fox Farm Happy Frog soil. And today I noticed some little tiny bugs flying around. Then I seen these in the soil in my seedling station. I think these things are eating the roots! Nice little seedling one day, the next day its brown and dead with no root system.

Any help would be appreciated. I tried doing a internet search. This is how I got the picture since these worms hate light and I couldn't catch them in the light.

Some sort of nematode ? But which sort ??? I have often thought of microwaving soil before use, not sure what effect that would have on plant growth. good bacteria is very resilient and i think nasties would be zapped

Nematodes

There are hundreds of thousands of different species of nematode, some are harmful to marijuana but these are rare. Most often they attack roots but some attack the upper sections of the plant. Nematodes that are harmful to marijuana plants are for the most part microscopic, and the varieties that are visible are so rare you'd have a better chance being struck by lightning. If your plant is growing slowly, turning yellow and dying, or being slowly eaten away with no visible signs you MIGHT have harmful nematodes. Nematode infestation closely resembles nitrogen deficiency. Taking a soil sample is the best method of detecting nematodes. Take a small tube and punch a core sample out of soil, or inspect hydroponic roots carefully. Roots being attacked by nematodes will be soft, mushy, and beginning to fall apart. The best countermeasure to not contracting nematodes is to use clean soil every time. It takes a fair amount of time for a infesting nematode to build up sufficient numbers to attack your plant, re-using soil invites these circumstances. Nematodes can be eradicated with a neem soil drench and neem oil applied as a spray.

redevil,
Thanks for the info. I have been researching as well. The problem with these little buggers is that they are destroying any hopes for good germination. In fact, I have been having a problem with germination for 2 months and I think I just now discovered the problem. When I give my seeds away, people are reporting 9-10 would germinate and this has happened on more than a few occasions. But I have been getting like 3-10. So the problem is compounded in that seedlings need moist soil and so do these gnat larvae so I guess my only hope is reem oil and or safe oil. Hopefully I can get back on the right track sooner than later.

The other option would be to use rockwool to get things started as they would have a harder time moving close enough to a seed to attack it.

But thanks again!

but then again you are organic, not sure what effect that will have on the "beneficial microby things" but if your beneficials are accompanied by nasties ( wolfs in sheeps clothings) then "Kill them all. God will know his own "

Bump: Just need a little advice on how to get rid of these things.

not exactly sure if hygrozyme will defeat those little guys but it is a great add to any line it basically eats away bad microbes in soil and its 100% inert only enzymes.

Also just read that putting apple cider and water mix in a cup next to the soil will attract them and then drown in the cup. but that doesnt go for hte larvae
