New Grower What do leaves do?

Leaves cause cancer cut them off :-P sarcasm. Bottom line is..there's more than one way to grow a killer plant.

Those leaves when green have a lot of chemistry going on. Rosenthal's book has an understandable description of all the processes.

This article may be of interest. http://www.hightimes.com/read/key-points-harvest-time Just posted elsewhere. So many conflicting opinions, methods and techniques etc. As a consequence, I normally yield to the top resources like Rosenthal and HT.

Don't think it will cause contention. Just so many thoughts on what to do with leaves as conditions change.

In fact, Rosenthal shows by demonstration how removing "green and healthy" fan leaves prior to maturity effects yield. He even challenges the reader to try it. Rosey says leave them, unless, yellow or heavily necrotic.

Cheers

I did a noob mistake on one of my first grows and removed most of the leaves prior to starting to flush, thinking the same thing... The plant actually began to cannabilize the buds and ended up being a mess.lol buds all messed... Now I just leave well enough alone and let them do their thing...

Thanks for all the replies. Bit of a mixed bag really. I'll have to do some more reading. Some interesting thoughts guys :)

Wanna see defoliation. I didn't bring it up. But I molest my plants. Some strains it works (OG KUSH - a lot of indicas) take it well. Here.

The leaves are undergoing translocation... nutrients and minerals are moving throughout the plant from the leaves to buds and the growing tips. Sugars are also moving, and starches are breaking down, being used, and moving also.

As soon as you start your "flushing" and moving away from all ferts, it's actually to benefit, if you're going to be actually smoking, to trim the sun/fan leaves, but not the smaller ones. These big leaves hold the most "stuff" (sugars, starches, and minerals) in them, and since you don't want this to go into your buds, or allow for some odd growth at the top, you can cut them off.

That's sun and fan leaves... the ones that made to plant grow big. There are plenty of small leaves that will be able to make up for the loss of these leaves, as...

Removing these leaves will allow better (blue, for instance) light (these larger leaves are allowing more red light to pass through them, since green leaves transmit more red light) to reach the buds and their leaves and promote a tighter growth for the last weeks.

This does not apply to outdoors plants in the ground, just those indoors or in containers.

damn right you want all that , when flushing "the soil" we know we have the leaves to rely on to keep us going

the internet helps a lot , but it also hurts a lot

we have a bazillion new/newer growers spouting off crap they hear/read , crap they "think" is good info , then all these newer growers pass around all this piss poor info like a bunch of clucking hens

mjc your entire post is a step backwards in the development of growing , you and others are taking us back decades to a time before the info you posted was PROVEN to be wrong/bad

im sorry if my post comes off as rude , i dont intend it to be , i just dont know how to have people understand when there are soo many inexperienced people passing around poor info as if it is some new advanced technique , when in fact its a step backwards

im not saying "you" are inexperienced , but the info is very poor

without all that goodness you claim isnt wanted to go into the buds you will NOT get buds that explode in growth/weight , that explosion i said most people never see , the 2 biggest reasons for not seeing it are the info you posted and taking plants too soon

peace

ive been growing og kush for 4+ years COMERCIALLY ! and unless you want to wait an EXTRA 4+ weeks defoliation is NOT good

at the end of the year i will have yielded far more from the 12 crops i did compaired to the 8 you do , im saying you just as an example

defoliation is a step back decades and proven to be bad , by them ppl with degrees and also long time growers , not some internet growing god with 10 years or less worth of growing experience

peace
