New Grower What do you think about defoilation?

do cherry tomato plants get more bushy then mr stripey?

stop comparing one plant type of a species, and how pruning helps, to how it hinders another. shows tbis type of argument is moot... each different strain in a species react to nutes, light, stress, trimming, etc.etc. different then the next.

just because joe schmuckatelli grew 10pounds of orange zappa defoiling, and jim miagillacutti only grew 4 pounds of purple nurple not defoiling.......proves nothing, because there are checklists of other control factors that arent beig looked at.

lower leaves under canopy that are not growing, staying tiny...cut...your wasting nutes feeding a slow growing shoot.
if its blocking buds from even seeing light, cut it...its not going to hurt.

but leaves do allow light frequency through....even tbough your limited human eyes dont notice.....you cant see wavelenghts... and the more surface area for photosynthesis, the more nutes your plants process.....the more nutes that get processed...the bigger the buds can grow.

i only take out the inner leaves that are shading the buds and lowers that will drop anyway. just did 2 w.w photos. they were so bushy i had to thin or id get mold. did once during veg. and once at flip. nothing extreme. indica dom. seem to need it more .

This is a great thread this is like the pro abortion debate or any other debate that has gone on for years. I have a caramel cream actually 2 going right now and next wed they hit day 45. I am going to defoliate and see what happens if good or bad there is a lot of undeveloped sites on the bottom and middle that tucking wont do it or trimming a few leafs. The plant had some tucking at the beginning but that is it. It is scary but what the heck I have to try it once at least. Here is a quote from grow weed easy site they have a good chapter on it with pictures as proof. It also says many commercial crops are defoliated through their life to obtain max yields.

In the wild a fan leaf is a pretty necessary thing. Not only is it a solar panel but it is also a holding center for the plants nutrients. Indoor grows, where you control a constant supply of food to your plants, makes the fan leaf less necessary. Yes, they are a solar panel but they are also a huge blocker of light to your offshoots which need daily development to achieve greatness.”

I wouldn't mind do it but it also scares me.. You stress autos in any way you will get less yield.. I have seen that. I think the trick is to LST slightly and be careful how you do things and you should be fine. I personally just find the best companies for autos. stick a seed in soil and let them go. I did have to transplant an auto once and had 2 of the same strains side by side.. the one I transplanted gave me 55 grams less than the other that was grown start to finish in same container.

I dont have the most powerful lights though so I would be all about a safe non stressful way to get more light penetration down to lower bud sites.

I'll be keeping an eye on this post as if I can defoliate safely and not stress her I will do it.

cheers

View attachment 599861 Hi guys, im currently in my 4th week of flowering and I want as much light as possible on my lower buds. So im thinking about defoilation. This is auto blueberry from speed seeds. Should I remove some of her leaves? Does anybody have any strategies to doing this? In advance thank you for your advice. I would love to hear experiences with this method. Again thanks.:vibes:

Fellow Speed Seeds grower here. She isnt that old like 35 days and is right at 16 inches tall. I may end up defoliating her.

here she is as of today.

My Speed Seed is their Diesel Auto.

i think with autos a light defol. removing lowers that aren't getting light anyway to help air circulation. and the inners that are blocking bud sites is all id do besides a light lst. shouldn't slow them at all. in that second photo, id remove the two big fans at the 5th node front and back and the 2 right and left at 4th node. this will give light to your lower buds and allow them to move up towards the light. nice plant! ;)
