Lighting Who said cobs were just for growing

Have got to love Amazon prime! I just got in my outdoor security light. I was intrigued when I saw that it said powered by Cree. Then the price 100? When I arrived home I immediately ran out and started tearing it apart. Not to impressed, 980ma driver and a Cree 2530 cob. View attachment 656027
Probably from the same factory but the driver needed a little upgrade. 36v 1400ma should add a few watts.

So I got the new driver installed and really didn't consider a cob. Luckily I have a huge selection of 1212's that fit the new and old drivers forward voltage. I tore out the other cob and cheap holder for the 6500k clu048 1212 citizen cob upgrade. View attachment 656029View attachment 656030
Like a glove!! Went back together flawlessly!

Here is an installed shot on the outside of my shed.

I guess the point of this is having a little skill in multiple areas is always rewarding. I took an outdated brownish tinted cob and replaced it with one that probably doubled the lumens per watt in a very crisp blue/white light. Only cost an additional 15 bucks wooo hooo!

Makes my eyes burn

I've got the itch now too. I need some back yard lighting so maybe as I upgrade I'll be able to pass the COBs down to an outdoor application.

I see CREE in home dePot all the time and always snicker a little.

Cree is a very reputable name. It was the first company I saw selling higher end lights, cobs even the screw in e-26 bulbs. I remember going to Depot a little over 2 years ago buying a cart full of $12 6500k daylight Cree bulbs lol. They do have a great product but most importantly not everyone wants to spend 35-50 per cob considering multiple cobs are needed.

I got mine for a GREAT price from Northern Growlights. They seemed to blow out their 3590 stock and I got in on the firesale! I wish I would have got more when I had the chance but now that I've got the itch, I'm kinda glad that I didn't so I can explore some of the other options out there. These citizen 1212's sound interesting. The price point seems decent as well. Lots of options to learn up on over the holidays!

I would LOVE to catch a Christmas/New Year sale on some gear. I really need to get my existing fixture in order too before anything else. It's only missing duct tape at the moment. It's an embarrassing scene but it's doing the job.

Nothing's embarrassing about making due with what you got. I don't think I wrote about it here but my first cob light was bought nearly complete and just needed a frame. I was in a rush so I mounted it to a half ass tomato cage scrog thing. Only 2 cobs fit on it so I zip tied 2 together. That light grew some monster plants.

I'm so impressed with how things have been going under these 3590's so far. I've been trying to keep them high enough that the light is spreading evenly. I really need a par-meter. I guess I should've asked for one from Santa!

Ya but I've heard that there is a hydro farm par meter on Amazon in the past for around $25?is this a far better model or have they jacked the price up for us DIYers?

Those meters are typically lux meters. They are very good for basic measurements which are basically picking up lumens. I even used a free one on my iPhone for awhile. Either way a tool is much better than eyesight.
