Hi all,

I am hoping to learn more about edibles and would like some input.

Brief background: For the past few years I have had insomnia. I am wide awake at night and toss and turn until 3 -5 am. About a month ago I decided that I wanted to grow some weed even though I don't smoke weed because in the past it has made me feel very anxious and my mind runs wild. It's been really unpleasant. But, that doesn't mean that I don't love to grow. My original plan was to just give away my crops to people in need.

After doing a lot of research to prepare my grow I became very interested to try some of the high cbd and medical strains hoping that the cbd would counteract the psychoactive effects. I figured since I had my medical recommendation I might as well go to a good medical collective and sample a few strains. I got a high cbd strain and a heavy indica to help with sleep. My hope was that the high cbd strain would relax me without the mind trip. If I want to trip I will eat shrooms and go to the desert :)

While I was at the collective they offered me a free edible rice crispy treat made by TKO edibles. They told me to break it into 4 pieces. I was a little nervous about eating this one night before bed, but to my surprise the high was pleasant. It came on very slowly and I could tell that I felt relaxed and sleepy, but without any real psychoactive effects. I slept like a baby. On Sunday afternoon I ate another piece during the day and just felt relaxed, calm and sleepy but was able to act normal and carry on with a very pleasant day. Last night I ate another piece and by 11:30 I could barely keep my eyes open. It was GREAT to get a good night's sleep!

So far I really like the edibles because the effect comes on slowly, I don't have to stink up my house with dank smoke , they help me sleep, and I am not experiencing any real psychoactive high.

A few questions:

Is this just beginners luck or is it the ingredients in these specific edibles or do edibles often have this effect or does it differ from person to person? In other words why am I having such a good experience when smoking most buds just trips me out?

What part of the plant is used to make edibles? This is a large scale company (TKO in California) and a rice crispy treat only costs $6 and reads 15x on the wrapper. Each treat can be broken down into 6-8 doses. So I figure they must be using leaf, shake and plant matter to make these treats, hence the low cost. Unfortunately the wrapper does not state the ingredients or amount of cannabanoids

I take the mmj after dinner when my belly is full. Does this slow the absorption of the thc? (This would be a desired effect for me since I really don't like to feel high)

If I continue to eat small amounts of edibles will I be able to build my tolerance to mmj and be able to smoke the occasional bowl without being completely zonked?

So far I am pretty excited to find something that helps me sleep and doesn't want to make me hide under my bed :) Please share your experiences with me if edibles react similarly for you.

Thx,
Sunny

Hi Sunny,

So glad the edibles gave you relief from the insomnia.
Effects do differ from person to person but also from edible to edible.
And it will all change as your tolerance changes.

I smoked in my late teens, early 20's then stopped for 30 years.
Then I discovered cannabis would help me battle and treat my skin cancer. Of course cannabis helps with a lot of medical conditions...

Anyway, when I started smoking again, it was unpleasant...anxiety...thoughts racing...and I would analyze everything down to nothing - keeping me awake which was the opposite effect of what I wanted.
One toke would do it! Then I was Two Toke Tilly for awhile.
Thankfully that went away!

If you want to smoke...play with the different strains. The collective you go to should be able to help you with that.
You could use a vaporizer and not stink up the house.

With edibles, the cannabinoids are metabolized by your liver thats why it affects you different than when smoking.

Are you planning on making your own?
There are a lot of butter or oil recipes here.
For a high you use buds
For more CBD's you can use stems and leaves
It also makes a difference at what temperature you cook it at.

Almost forgot...An old friend of mine told me to smoke a joint of green dried leaves if I wanted to counteract a high.It does work.

Great info. Thank you..

What I plan to do is cultivate my buds in my own way to produce the desired effects. I will grow specific strains (Just got my critical cure and northern lights Auto seeds).. Then I will make my own edibles or tinctures or even oil so I can vape.

Yes, I am like you. I used to love getting high as a teenager. It was always fun and pleasant and even out of body sometimes. Then when I got into my mid twenties marijuana became really unenjoyable. I used to tell my friends "I'd rather you spike my drink with LSD than make me smoke a joint :)

What I notice here in Southern California that there is a large medical community, but there are also just a lot of people that like to get really high by hiding behind the medical laws. Who really needs 70% THC wax?? I plan to grow buds for medical or even light recreactional use that will be attractive to people like us that don't want to travel the cosmos. In my opinion, buds should have a nice flavor and smell with low thc and cbd levels at 1:1. This way a person or group of people can enjoy this amazing plant without being wasted. It'll just be nice to have this option.

My critical cure strain has 8% CBD and 6%THC according to the seed provider. This should be a really enjoyable product. I'll check on some of the oil/butter recipes.

Thx and nice to speak with you..

Your liver converts delta 8/9 THC into 11 hydroxy THC. So technically, the actual chemical reaction, and overall profile of the high is much different with edibles compared to smoking.

The key with edibles is practice, and honing in your dosages which can take some practice. I convert my trim into hash, and make hash with the edibles. Generally I end up with 150 or so cookies worth of clean tasting cannabutter to hold me over while the harvest dries and cures.

You can use butter or oil in any recipe, and with some practice you can cook a nice meal that will get you nice and lifted. Edibles are fun

I have about 10 grams of top shelf flowers sitting in my drawer. I think I will try to make some coconut oil. This way I can dilute it as much as I like and experiment a bit.

To Sunny747.

From personal experience, consuming edibles on a full stomach slows the time needed to absorb the medicine. On a full stomach, it may take up to 1 1/2 hrs to feel the effects. The amount of THC and cannabanoids varies with each batch as the trim is only as good as the plants it comes from. We do take great pride in keeping our strength as consistent as possible, and this is what has made our products so popular.

Over time you will build up a resistance and will need a little larger dose to obtain the same results. Most people however have different tolerance levels for smoking and ingesting, and one may not affect the other. An associate of mine smokes pretty much all day long, yet has a very low tolerance to edibles.

I use an edible every night for a great nights sleep, and know that the other medical benefits of cannabis are enhanced when ingesting as the medicine is in my system longer when ingesting versus smoking.

We also have a product called CocannaNut Oil, which is medicated coconut oil. If your clinic doesn't carry it, ask them to. You can create your own edibles with it and also use it topically.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

The reason I like edibles so much is if I eat sativa stuff turns out I get a slammin body high to go with that stellar head high... I made some brownies once with real red bud that a 5 x 5 inch square of it made me go completely numb form the stomach down :) true... I couldn't feel my legs... They were gone! OMG! Where the hell did they go?!? LoL

Ive been making lots of eddibles since I obtained my doctors recommendation.Medicinally I use it a lot for sleep/anxiety/adhd.

Ive found that the right dose is far less trippy then smoking. This is of coarse at the right dose. If its a purer sativa, and or a low cbd indica. It can get more psychedelic then smoking. Though, for me its way less of an anxious trippy then smoking. I suppose this is to the gradual come on that luls you into the head space.

Personally I usually prefer the mor4e tripper strains. Those dont work as well for sleep though. Makes me want to stay awake.

My Favorite is to make some creamed cannabis tea

1 Small suacer pan
Fill half way with water and poor in some milk. I eye ball it.
1tbs of butter and 1tsp coconut oil
Cinnamon,cloves,vanilla,sugar to taste.

Mix all contents(excluding the cannabis) Put Stone on high heat to bring to boil. Once the butter has melted mix in the cannabis.
Once it starts to boil. Bring it down to a medium heat boil. You can simmer but this will take longer. Though, produces better results (IMHO)

Boil it down until you have the desired drinkable amount. Or at least for 30 minutes to 60 minutes. A good 45-60 minute simmer seems to make it a much more sleepy time drink.

I would start out at 1 gram of shake/nug trim and or .5 grams of high quality buds. Then work your way up to your sweet spot if desired.

I also use this for if I catch a cold and have to go to work. I seriously have moments where I forget Im getting sick.

Point is, I love eddibles. I wish I had enough to make them more often.

Stir frequently (no more then 5 minute breaks.

That is EXACTLY why I love sativa edibles during the day. I always miss the body high when I smoke a sativa. and its not drowsy at all.

Thants exactly where I like most of my edibles to.A nice lightly ambered up Sativa or a nice Sative and a lightly ambered up Indica blend of Sat and Indie in the oils n butters I like too.A nice body n head trippy high is kinda where I enjoy much of my time too LOL!"AFN smoke out"

I'm really liking the edibles too. Made stir fry one night using my canna olive oil. Also just made some kickass brownies! I don't have any Sativa dominant strains at the moment ( maybe the greencrack is? don't remember ). I do know that my White Widow based oil has some head trip to it, but its mild. I ate 1/2 a brownie and i was glued to the sofa when it kicked in, and it was just a little trippy when I tried to sleep. It was all very pleasant though, and I was totally pain free.
