Wienerwoods' Microscopy Adventure

Badass thread Ww! Nice job, you ever gunna spawn to some horse poo? I highly recommend that.

Thanks!! I just did my first grain-to-grain transfer a couple of hours ago into four half quart jars. Now I'll just have to wait and see if things work out. Got some colonized spawn left over, too so I'll see if I can use that later. If the G2G was successful I'll probably be doing it at least once more before using half to spawn to horse manure. I've got two 2-liter plastic bags of manure ready to be pasteurized and I have an interesting idea for a monotub. I'll be doing a more comprehensive update with pictures soon.

Right on man, I like to use hpoo, coir, verm, and gypsum in my bulk sub. Has been working great for me. I'll be watching from here on out.

Packed on top of the collapsing shotgun fruiting chamber we see something really cool. Those eight jars in the back are my first and second attempt at a grain-to-grain transfer. Both batches of jars were shaken to fully break them up at about 80% colonization to look for contaminants and they're all looking clean.

For the lids I used a new kind of synthetic filter that I have never seen before. The filters are about as thick as a paper towel and they're made of teflon. Teflon is hydrophobic which helps keep contaminants from germinating through a wet filter. It should also be extremely durable. These are the two lid designs I've been working with:

The lids with injection ports were the first I made and they actually have two layers of the filter material. When I saw these filters stay adhered and work out in general I made the newer ones with just one layer.

And the two smaller jars? Those are biopsies I scraped from the soft insides of this jolly bunch

It's the same cake in both pics.

And this little lump of questionable looking mold is actually one of the bruised, moist looking pieces of mushroom tissue that turned furry just this morning

It's really tricky to get a sharp image of something happening inside one of those jars...

And now the story of that grain/vermiculite abomination in a pyrex dish. I threw it out. Not before it flushed three times for about 40 fresh grams, though! Not exactly worthwhile but worth it as an experiment, I'd say.
That thing grew out some gnarly fruitbodies. Here's a picture of the third flush, just in time for Halloween!

And that's about it for now. Enjoy some more photos of a seriously fucked up mutation and some random seed waiting for the impending doom.

damn man you got alot goin on and i like it!

Thanks! Alot indeed but sadly it seems there's something alien in at least one of the clone jars... Don't think it's cubensis.

Right there:

Still stuff to sort out before I can finally spawn any of the eight finished jars. Thankfully the PF cakes are producing more than enough for my use meanwhile.

are you talking bout the grain on whats coming off the grain?

Woooooow!!!!! Looks like a great fkn time!!!

I was thinking about making some great time chocolate today lol. I need to experiment with different ways to eat them raw since I can't do ethanol extractions right now (by far my favorite way to dose).

@tripaholic88 There's a small patch of white growth just visible on the grain I highlighted. It looks a bit like fine sand so I'm guessing it's green mold in which case it should sporulate in just a couple more days and I can be sure.

Ethanol extraction on these fun-guys lol? I know nothing about these except I have a blast after I ralph haha...how does the extraction work? I've only heard that in relation to making dabs. Sorry if it's a basic question. It's early as hell and I'm trying to get my sh*t together lol.

Coffee and a bowl anyone???

There are a different ways to do the ethanol extraction, mine is basically a combination of two.

First you take a pyrex measuring cup or similar and put your finely ground mushrooms in it. Then you pour in ethanol and let it sit for 12 hours in the dark. I use 160 proof vodka. You can probably use anything over 140 proof, as long as it's not denatured. Be sure to pour in some extra as the mushroom matter is going to expand a little bit. Also, cover (preferably seal) the dish as it's probably not good for the potency to have a lot of air exchange in there.

The second step only involves the mushroom matter after you've strained and put aside the ethanol from the 12 hour soak. Get a pot full of boiling water and make a double boiler with a new dish that you'll use to do a second pull on the mushroom porridge. Add the solids in the dish and combine with ethanol just as before. Only now instead of waiting for 12 hours you'll be heating the ethanol for 20 minutes or so. The water doesn't have to boil, but it should remain hot enough to get the ethanol to boil. Filter out solids while hot and combine the liquids.

If you wish, there's a third step to compact or even get the extract to fit in a couple of gelatine capsules. It involves using the double boiler setup again to evaporate ethanol from the final product at a vastly increased speed. Just do not completely dry it out, I guess.

You can also store it pretty well. It should last for months if not years in the fridge.
