I think it would possibly stress the plants, but I am not sure as I have not seen anything grown with lights shining from underneath also.
One thing to consider is that the underneath of the leaves is not designed to absorb light, you will notice that after several hours your leaves will turn their tops to maximize their absorption of the light source.
It would probably be a good experiment, you just want to keep an eye out for light burn or stress.
That is kinda what i thought they would do, the lower leaves would probably turn upside down in order to photosynthize but that may not be a bad thing becuase the leaf is going to go in the direction it is getting the most lumens from. I mean people use LED's and CFL's all the time for side or "supplemental" lighting. Why not with HID? I cannot do it currently but I think that it might be something I try in the future. You would literally have to keep the light and hood at 72-75 and that would be a herculian task IMO. We'll see lol
