Old Canadian Auto Pot Trial and errors

thcimage.jpg
I'm a 70 year old Canadian living close to the Atlantic ocean. I've tried outdoor growing here and the weather just doesn't cooperate for a good finish. Too many cold, wet, damp.foggy days that doesn't burn off and days on end of that leads to the dreaded Bud rot & PM. I went inside about 23 years ago with a 1000w hps....I vegged and flowered under it not knowing any better for a few goes before I went under T5 fluorescent that I;m still using today, ( new tubes & ballasts of course ).

I now have a variety of SpiderFarmer lights and a Burple I'll use for extra light on the edges if needed in a 5x5 tent, I've only been growing for 4 years with any advice and boy did I have a lot wrong. PH? PPM? whats that you say? Humidity % is important? WTF an auto? Light leaks in flower? it can take 10+ weeks for a plant to finish? WTF is a trichome? on and on it goes. lol Before legalization I was too paranoid to look on websites for help for fear the man may track down my address and burn me down for growing 4-5 plants in my basement.

Any ways I came here because I was looking for info on Auto Pots. I'm not sure about the reservoir system and whether I feed light nutes all the time or use the res for water only? and feed once a week? or do I switch out water for food? then switch out food for water? I'm confused....(70 ) The 4 plants I have to put in the new pots are clones from now flowering mothers. I'll take cuttings off the clones to keep the strains I want to keep alive. I've a choice of 2-GG#4, 2- Gelato, 3- AK47/Blackberry & 2- Gsc. I have them all in 3 gal fabric pots.

In my 5x5 tent I've only 3 plants flowering now, I had 5 but on a bad morning about 2 weeks ago I took my cutters to 2 of them and chopped them out. The GG & Gelato were fked a few different reason why I fked them up but I couldn't look at them any longer and they were gone. I'm not in need of half assed weed that I'd stunted & I was also killing off their leaves so instead of growing them out and turning them into oil. I put them in a garbage bag and disposed of them.

I've a bunch of pics on a different computer so I'll update with pics when I can. I'm going to soak my balls today (clay) to lower the ph after watching a couple of Yt vids it recommends I lower the ph, I'll refresh but I think its 5.8? If I only had a working hot tub I'b soaking my own...lol ....(70)

Another little tid bit I'll add is I'm Revegging an auto......yes.......yes I am for those of you that doubt me I have a trail of pics and both mom & a brother from the same batch that I let bloom outside. Shes an odd looking thing but she's ready for transplanting into a 3 gallon pot from the small 3/4 gal shes in. She is around 3 months old from a lower branch I cut off mom 1 week into flower and put it in a 1 gal container of water....I kept topping up the water with feed when I was feeding my vegging plants and after 2 months I saw a root out of the bottom with a bunch of small whit bumps on the stem. I put it in a solo cup with promix and she started to grow slowly now she has 3 blad leaves and I see 5 in behind.......shes growing.....last pics

Welcome to AFN @Catman3 ! So you're growing photos in autopots with soil and salt nutes as the plan? Yes? You can skip the clay balls, that layer they suggest at the bottom is no good, you can mix the balls into your soil if you want to use them though... Soil pH 6-6.5, if your in coco you're looking for 5.8

I plan on using faux air domes and I need the clay balls to protect the air lines from plugging....No?.....I have 4" air pots and air stones with a manifold I can control the air flow to each pot with. As I say its all new to me and if there's something you know about these things I don't ( which is probably a lot seeing as I know zip) Then please let me know too...

I've just watched YT videos that promote their usage and an empty tent I thought I'd use with the new auto pots.....Are you implying photo's are not a good thing to grow in these pots? I have a bunch of auto seeds I could grow in them but I prefer photo's and I have 9 ready to do something with. 5 I'll put in my 5x5 I though 4 in my 3x3 would work well.

I used autopots with coco for about 2 years or so. I don't use them anymore but I've still got them around. No issue with photos at all, I was just trying to see what your plans for the grow were since every grow is different. I also tried the air domes. Didn't really like them since they kinda seem to just draw the roots straight to them and not spread out into the pot as much and no difference in plants really with or without them. So just less tubes and timers to deal with if you pull the plants out for any reasons

:welcome:Welcome to AFN brother! :welcome:

"I'm going to soak my balls today (clay)" I'm so glad you included clay! :crying:

I plan on using faux air domes and I need the clay balls to protect the air lines from plugging....No?

Last time I ran AutoPots with the air domes, I put the whole dome in an old tube sock, held in place with a bread tie. Worked like a charm and no medium was able to penetrate, but lots of roots did! :hump:
Anyways, Good luck with your grow! :peace::pass:

Hi There :D

I've used autopots for a good while now!
Here's my thoughts! (I'm a soil grower btw (biobizz lighmix))

I'm not fussed about clay balls or airdomes. The only bits i use from the kit is the copper mat at the bottom (which i assume stops the roots clogging up the mini-rez in the pot tray)

As for feeding. You cshould hand water for about 20 days until the leaves reach (or nearly reach) the edges of your pot, and then you can start using the rez.

You can use a water only rez if you have got some kind of living soil (or biotabs) - but you may need ammendments to be top dressed later down the line.

For simplicity i use canna Start (for the first week or 2), Canna Vega for until flowering, and then canna Flores for flowering (with a little bit of flowering enhancers)

I always feed, but not at a high strength.

Hope this helps with any confusion about the pots! :d5:

Hey folks thanks for the replies. I should probably explain a little better what my plans are. I have 9 clones at 6 around weeks in age. I'm a long time grower using Promix and general Hydroponics 3 part flora series with Floalicious Plus.. I use gallon bottles and I have + 3/4 gal of each nute so I'm not switching until I run out of these...hell I've been using GH nutes 20+ years I may never switch..lol........

I'm going to choose 4 plants and put them in the new auto pots, these are fully established plants. I should have come here for more info before buying but.....I've 4 pots 40 L clay balls 10kg perlite and half a 3.8cu/ft bale of Promix HP........4 air pots To be used as domes 4 air stones with a pump and individual shut off valves to adjust air flow,,,timers galore.

I'm washing the clay balls now at 5.56 ph.....I'll refresh it today. All the information I have on growing with these pots comes from their web site and YT video's. I've seen a few with the domes so I thought I could use as directed with the air pots, air stone and clay balls. Now I'm feeling a negative impression of the clay balls and air domes from experienced users.

I'm pretty well stuck in my first grow with the pots, balls, dome & such seeing as I've invested this much into it.

The reservoir feeding still isn't clear in my mind , with my 3 part nutes I'm going to skip the Flurolicious because of the kelp in it and fined another cleaner substitute. I wondering if I half feed all the time or if I continue with a water feed regime using full strength nute's one cycle and water only the next.....

How long do the reservoirs last before they need replenishing? Do I run a cleaning cycle through the lines once a week? Would 2 reservoirs be a good idea?
Copper side down in the pot?.....Copper socks around the pots? ( add on item )

So I've never used promix or any peat based. But with coco, which shouldn't be that different other then pH, your gonna feed from the rez. Just lower your inputs and watch the plants. 4 autos in flower would run me less then 12 gallons a week. But that's just me... Would put 8 gallons new feed in the rez on weekend and top with another 4 gallons midweek. Cooper side goes towards the roots

And check out the buildasoil YouTube channel. He's currently growing photos from cuts in autopots in the current season thing or whatever

I too use auto pots 6gallon and the air domes. I luv them I do my own Organic living soil and have figured out several hacks if any one wants to chat ABOUT THEM hit me up on Facebook I am a Admin and or Mod in several large groups.. Auto Cannabis Growers Group, Multiverse Beans, Dreamdeans with my buddy Derek. S

I'm trying to make the XL auto pots work for me. I don't do Facebook or instagram or stuff like that. Is there a place where I can get the best info and some of your hacks? I'm growing cantalope in them now until I get the hang of them. If I kill cantalope with overwatering something is wrong. I don't give up, I learn.

Got em working now. I use organic, "Lite potting soil for hanging plants". I add 25% more (rinsed), perlite by volume. Lightly fertilized with 1 tsp. Grow dots per gallon of soil mix. I direct sow into 6-inch pots and let them grow the first three sets of leaves. I carefully transplant into five-gallon fabric pots with pre moistened soil. I turn on the water on the same day as transplanting. The roots meet up with the water pretty quickly. Very little shock at all. Plain Rainwater or dehumidifier water is all that I put in the tank. So far things look great.

That should be labeled "Witchers' Creek!" I got confused because I also ordered Wizards' Stash. These plants are 21 days old and that is about the best looking 21 day old plants that I have grown yet.
