Question:

What are the preferred specifics of this system? 1 air stone per 5 gallon bucket, ph at 5.8.

What PPM are used?

PPM and ph, jump to extremes, like overnight? :jaw:

We require more specific info from you.
If I understand you, you are having extreme flucutuations in ph and ppm.
How old are the plants?
Can you tell us what they are starting at? and what they change to?, how long it take them to change?
what nutrients you are using?
you say six bucket dwc
are they connected or just six self contained buckets? shared air supply does not count

all connected to 7th bucket with pump. Just want to know what ppm are recommended for DWC. I know 1400 is good to maintain with a flood table.

What is the recommended ppm for DWC? It should be pretty much the same with DWC. yes, no?

For Grow, lets say, Fox Farm

For Bloom Tiger Bloom.

But that shouldn't matter. ppm's are ppm's Right?

Lets go one step at a time. This is for educational purposes.

If you are running a recirculating system, the nutes you chose have a lot to do with ph & ppm issues.
Fox farms recommends http://www.kggrowbrew.com/images/FoxFarm-Hydroponic-Schedule.jpg depending on how old your plants are.
if you are growing autos, it is generally accepted to start at about 1/4 of recommended dosages and gradually bring it up to what the plant will tolerate.

I concur. Need more info, please.

Great. I saved the chart. I understand all the chart is saying except EC Range. What is that?

I understand 5.8 for Ph.

Start low and work your way up. I set the max for my White Widow at 800ppm. much less than many do. But I've seen the results of DWC run at a constant 600 ppms both veg and flower, and on multiple strains, and this guy grows 600 gram PER plant with just a 600 watt MH light! Checkout HybridHygro on youtube. This guy sets the standard for DWC RDWC. He is who inspired me to use DWC for my first grow. My basic technique I learned from his videos. I have 2 VERY healthy plants that have never had a deficiency., and I only a few days ago exceeded 600ppms. Plants can only consume X amount of nutrients per day. I test my ppms now every 3 days, and if its below 380 ppms, I top up with water+ nutes to bring it back to 800 ppms or less.
That's just my 2 cents. But I do see it working for me.

I understand 5.8 for Ph.

EC is another method for measuring nutrients similar to ppm. some ppm meters will give EC readings as well.

EC is like PPM but in my opinion EC is much much better.

I'm going to have a little rant here so please excuse me :D

I don't really 'get' why people use PPM on internet forums because of the fact their are not one, not two but THREE different ways of calculating PPM, so your PPM might be different to my PPM.

If I'm saying 1200ppm and I'm using the 500 scale and you are using the 700 scale and neither of us says which scale we're talking about that would be wrong for you, as 1200pm on the 500 scale is 1680ppm on the 700 scale. Where as both of these values = 2.4EC. So if we both talk in EC to each other there's no confusion! :-D

With EC it's all the same across the board for everyone, no matter where in the world you are from.

If you are reading from a book that says you should grow your crop at 1100ppm - how do you know which scale the writer is referring to? Is the scale on your ppm meter right for the job? If the book was written in the USA, it could be the 650 or 500 scale. If the book is written in the UK, it could be the 700 scale. If it was written in Australia, well it could be any of the three!

When people talk in PPM I'm generally pretending it doesn't exist since I can't understand it I just have to ignore it. When people talk in EC I'm know ooooh that's interesting, because I know I understand EC..

/ end of rant

Thank for you for letting me get that all out. :D

In reply to the Original Poster, tell us more info, what nutrients you're using especially. The key to understand is information. Help us understand :D
