Hi all,

Just about to start my first grow and due to me going on holiday in February I need to start them this weekend really.

Got everything ready last night and went to open the seeds to germinate one of them. I noticed that there seems to be what I can only describe as a crack on each seed that im worried about... Pictures attached although they arent the best quality Im pretty sure they do show you what you need to see.

I started to try and germinate one last night anyway in a wet paper towel so will check it when I get home from work but are all my efforts in vain if these seeds are duds?

I really hope they are ok because I won;t have time to get more seeds in time as they need to be started asap

Apologies if there is nothing wrong with them but I will put that down to my lack of experience given this is my first time

With tons of experience germinating seeds those seeds are fine an will have a high germination rate I have lots of experience poppin mephisto beans an the have top rate beans with a very high germination rate.

what exactly do you mean with that crack?
I can't discover anything odd/wrong with those seeds.

or do you mean the black stripe/stain?
patterns of black stripes are normal on weedseeds. there is a lot of variation between strains though. some have no stripes at all, just solid brown/beige. some will have stripes that are unbroken from top to bottom. and some will have random broken stripes like yours.
and there's alsp difference in contrast. sometimes the base colour is dark/the lines are light, so they don't stick out that much. but I also have seeds where the stripes are dark and the space in between very light, making them stick out very clear.

btw, I think it's a different layer, but not 100% sure. since I've had some seeds come fresh of the plant where they had stripes at first, then I rubbed of a thin layer/skin away and they were clear/solid in color.
I think that could also be the case with the midle of those 3 seeds, where there's a pattern on one end of the seed and the res is solid.

btw, immature beans never have stripes. so having those stripes/paterning well visible means it's a good mature seed.
the opposite doesn't apply, a solid seed can be fully mature too, but strains that do show a visible pattern will only develop it if the seed is fully ripe.

One popular method to select seeds for germination is to drop the seed in glass of water, keep it covered in dark place and check after 12 hrs to see if the seed has sank on its own .. if yes, then there is a high chance that its a good seed.. if not, give it a gentle tap to see if it sinks .. if it does, well there is still a moderately high chance ... and if it doesnt sink or slowly re surfaces again, then there is a low chance ... also, most important thing here to remember .. chance is never a guarantee !

I always germ my seeds in a glass of water(btw, I see no reason to put it in the dark, never had an issue with keeping it somewhere with light, I just put the glass somewhere where I can easily take a look at it, and won't easily knock it over), and my experience is also that seeds that stay floating and won't stay down, are duds, usually immature seeds.
however, pretty much all seeds keep floating as long as you don't disturb them. a slight tap though, and they sink(after they've had a while to soak).
however I think it's just a measure of maturity, if you germ older seed you can have seeds that sink and are mature, but won't germ due to old age.
