Live Stoner Chat AFNs Live Food Thread.

UM.

I'm not sure how long 'AFN'S live food thread' has been in existence, but can I just say what an AWESOME idea this is? lol

Don't knock it till u tried it.

Take a small sweet nugget of best bacon/gammon ham and instead of roasting it, boil it for 1 hour an a half. ish maybe less, depends on size,

And you have a most perfect, moist, lean and tasty chunk of meat. Much better than a roast, I promise. The water left from the boiling, is salty enough to use to boil the cabbage. Floury potatoes cooked in their skins until they burst are the final touch. Heaven.

I know it sounds iffy, but try it, you will be amazed. Just get the best bit of bacon joint you can afford. Back in the day in Ireland, for the poor people, it was usually a pigs head. DaddyP tells me they would fight over the "ladder" which was the roof of the mouth. Well crispy and tasty! Also the ears were crunchy. The snout had a taste of its own and the tongue was a favourite too.

We don't know we are born these days. Here in the Black Country, pigs trotters are a delicacy. (The feet) I have not yet tried those!!!

eP.

Sounds Yummy!!!

Tomorrow is St. Patrick's Day and we always have Corned Beef and Cabbage. I like to add potatoes and carrots with it.

Oh TaNg!! Good idea...AFN Live Food Thread! :d5:

I'm happy to see so many healthy choices in the food being presented here.

Elvis with his shrimp (my favorite), crawfish and alligator...all healthy meats.
http://www.wisegeek.org/is-alligator-meat-good-for-you.htm WOW $13.60 a pound!
As far as meats go, alligator is usually considered to be relatively healthful. It is generally quite lean, and contains almost no saturated fat; it is also high in a number of essential vitamins andminerals. Meat from alligators may have more calories per serving than more “traditional” choices like beef or chicken, but many still view it as a healthy alternative because of how those calories are accounted for, in most cases through protein rather than fat. Tail meat is often considered the best from a nutritional perspective, followed by steaks cut from the body and feet. A lot depends on preparation, but alligator meat is usually a good choice for people looking for a low-fat, health-conscious dish.
Differences Based on Cut

The specific nutritional composition of alligator can vary somewhat depending on the part of the body at issue. Most experts believe that meat from the animal’s thick tail is the best for you, since it is made primarily of packed muscle tissue. Alligators use their powerful tails to propel them through the water, and the meat from this region is contains virtually no fat. Cuts taken from the torso tend to have more fat by weight, and meat from the feet (or “wings” as they are often called commercially) tends to be densely fibrous, which can make them tougher and more difficult to digest. For the most part, though, all parts of the body have basically the same nutritional composition
I was surprised to see kangaroo on the menu

Here are some of the impressive features of kangaroo meat:

  • OPEN RANGE MEAT: Kangaroos aren’t farmed. They’re open range animals and harvested in their own environment. So what you get is a lean red meat that’s free from antibiotics, added growth hormones and added chemicals.
  • ENERGY: Kangaroo meat has a kilojoule content that compares favourably to other lean red meats.
  • PROTEIN: Kangaroo meat is a terrific source of high-quality protein.
  • FAT: Kangaroo meat is impressively low in fat, with less than 2% fat. What’s more, it’s low in ‘undesirable’ saturated fats.
  • OMEGA-3: Kangaroo meat is a source of heart-friendly omega-3’s.
  • CLA: Kangaroo meat naturally contains Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) – yet another bonus for our wellbeing.
  • MINERALS: Kangaroo meat is a particularly good source of the ‘must-have’ minerals iron and zinc.
  • VITAMINS: Kangaroo meat is a good source of valuable B-group vitamins, including Vitamin B12, Vitamin B6, niacin, riboflavin and thiamin.
  • TICK OF APPROVAL: The National Heart Foundation ‘Tick’ has been granted to a large range of Macro Meats Gourmet Game kangaroo products.

Root, you are my kinda Gal. Let Root be thy Cook!

I have started to make my own food recently. After all, how hard can it be. Instead of a Chinese take-away I cook my own. Lots of fresh veg, ginger, garlic, chillies, onions, peppers etc etc and a bit of black bean sauce, it knocks spots off the expensive take away stuff. And tastes soooo good.

I am into fresh ingredients that are not mucked around with. The taste is so much better. It is satisfying to create and is so cheap. There is no need to buy pre-processed rubbish when your own is better and cheaper.

We should start a revolution, one meal at a time.......eP.
