Hey, JT! I generally wait to start tying off until the main stem just starts to harden up, particularly if I'm trying to bend it from the top. I know there are folks who will tie the main stem to one side of the pot and then bend up higher in the opposite direction. I tried it once... snap!....
What I do is to get a sense of how the side nodes are going to grow out, and then tie them out mid-stem so that the bud sites get better penetration. The most I've ever tied out were 6 side stems. I am certain doing it increased my yield by 20-30%! And, I use pipe cleaners-cut into short lengths (1.5-2") -and make a loop around the stem, then tie the loop with nylon cord to a hole in the pot. Hope that helps, Brother

I can't remember if it was here on AFN, but there is a thread that I saw of someone tying the entire main stem to a bamboo rod- pure horizontal- and every side node on the plant grew like a top cola- it was a lineup of tops across the entire plant. Must have doubled the yield, at least! some love, JT!
