In past grows I have used only 3 gal fabric pots and almost all the grows were heavy with big buds. I'm not sure why but after reading a post about 5 gal pots I decided to give them a try. I'm in the 5th week and am growing 1 dos si does and 2 green crack autos. Both the Seedsman Green Crack autos were in a race to see which was the biggest, while the other is a dwarf in comparison.
It was really easy to know when to water 3 gal pot. Weight was the first indicator and watching for the first signs of droop. The 5's have that extra 2 gal of soil so it's harder for me to judge dryness. With the 5's the first 4 weeks of watering was not drain to waste. By the 6th week in 3's I watered when almost dry watering for 10% runoff.
So, someone tell me if given a healthy plant, of the root system will eventually occupy all of the pot

So a few things. Yes the root system should eventually occupy the entire pot.

It important to makes sure you are watering the soil, not just the plant. It is important to keep all the soil at an ideal moisture level. If there are dry pockets of soil, the roots will not grow into these dry spots.

In addition to roots not liking dry spots, all the good stuff working for us below the surface in the rhizosphere in conjunction with the roots like microbes and beneficial bacteria and fungi, will lay dormant, die off or moves to the damp soil.

It does not take very long, especially for the tap root to get to the walls of a 5 gal pot. The roots grow alot in the first couple weeks. They should have hit the walls and bottom awhile ago.

So keep proper soil moisture levels in the entire pot from the start, without overwatering is key to establishing a good and healthy root system.

Good luck growing :toke:

Based on that, would a 7 gallon be better for the plant?

I've seen taller and squat containers of the same volume, what proportions are best?

I've started seedlings in 6" containers, and by the time the leaves reach the edge its already rooted to the edges.

If I'm not trying to do a SOG where max number of plants is important, what size container do I want for a Sativa that can fill a 3x3 tent?
