The reason that badges are not better explained, is I think the system is going to be reworked. The badge thread explains most of what you need to do to obtain the badges if you are interested in getting some.

There is a glitch in the system, that when someone starts a thread, on the first post of the thread their profile shows every badge that the category moderator has showing on their profile.
