New Grower Best Germination method for Autos

lots of variables as to where to put the 400 watt hps. i got mine exactly 17 inches up because thats where my temp at the soil surface reads 75 that way it can fluxuate if needed a little bit warmer and cooler. just set ur thermometer on the soil and play with the height untill theyre bigger and can take more heat. hope this helps!

I'm at a height of 18 inches, hoping for the first signs of pop, they were planted Sunday morning 5/18/14. A friend advised me to not worry until 5 days of no germination, if It comes to that are there any other options?

If you have extra beans to spare, get a couple started in paper towels as back up. But you can run into having too many germinated beans for the amount of space available....

They're comin....just wait it out a bit longer. :)

They are starting to sprout!!!! WOOO!!!!

Now that seedlings have appeared, is 18 inches still the safe height? or should I raise the light up much higher?

There we go....:)

Now, don't kill them with attention. Just keep them in moist soil (not wet) sprayer works good for controlled amounts of water.
and keep the light far enough away to not burn them (hand warmth test at soil level)

You want very gently warm at seedling level, no more :)

Congrats!

Light hight

One quick tip if you haven't found it out yet is NEVER spray water on your plants with the lights on. The bead of water act like little magnifiers and can burn the leaves. I always try to water during lights out, especially when the plants are young. I'm sure most experienced growers know this but thought I would put it out for anyone that hasn't learned it yet. I would normally start my lights at about 24" for the first few days and then slowly lower them as the seedlings begin to grow, watch for stretching and that will tell you when to lower your lights. Good luck on you grow.

i throw my seeds in a cup of tap water. Leave for 24 hours in a drawer. I then place it in a damp paper towel in the same drawer for another 24 hours and plant. I'm not worried about air flow, just darkness. You don't have air flow when the seed is submerged in water and it grows just fine.

For me, I don't water when the lights are out. IMO it promotes mold. The water can't evaporate and it becomes stagnant. Just my opinion.

the water has air in it

i also dont water during lights out for the very reason you mentioned , but with seedling its more a stem rot then a mold that worries me

but if i was "spraying or misting" then yeah id do it with lights out or move the seedling away from the light until the leaves dried

peace
