So i've seen all sorts of methods of growing and tried lots myself, one of the methods which used to be popular was Tiering.
Method being that you start in a small pot without a bottom, in a pot and then when it's established, you can easily transplant on into a bigger pot.

The theory is you get a better start in a small pot - which i can certainly say works for me for photo period plants. But Autos dont like to be transplanted much so the tiering method is more gentle.

Here's how it went for me :)

As you can see - Things were NOT going blues way lol The little white widows did not like what i was doing to them. Pictures were either too dissapointing to take or post lol

Big Disclaimer

Dutch passion seeds are awesome!! I've grown WW normally since (without a journal (you can just about see it at the back of the cab in my 2nd Black Cream journal)) and the yeild was lovely - Jars full!

This was an experiment that i havent repeated - for me Tiering and multi-potting is over, but i guess you dont know until you try!

One seed - One pot - Dutch passion white widow will Thrive! :)

The Smoke!? Well ... it's white widow - really strong!!
The Smell - It's Dank!

It's not my every day smoke, but sure is a nice treat!!

(And also .. don't be fooled- there was over an ounce of bud there (not amazing ... but for the size - very reasonable! ^_^)

I did some tireing when starting quite a few autos last spring!some for outside some inside. I used coir pots however and punched lots of holes in them Air pot style. Also soaked and broke the bottom a little on transplant worked out well got a couple of O's from an ABB in an under filled 10L smart pot. Air pots all the way now mind.

Nice try Blue they look cute those plants I bet you they still got you fried. I plant directly into 20 litres pots. I use paper towel rolls I cut them to two inches bury them in the middle of the airpot makes it easy to tend to and not lose the seedling.

hi Blue - an interesting piece of work. I have seen some pretty good results with tiering, though that was a few years ago with photoperiod plants. I always thought perhaps there is an optimised relationship between the width of the pots and the depth of them in order to get the best root development. I also wondered whether cutting off the base of each container is essential to allow all the roots to reach the next level (as opposed to getting predominantly root bound in the first pot)

Hehe Hi Tony - This one one of my embarrasing AFN moments lol

I think Tiering could work with practice - but with the stability of Autos constantly improving, I'm starting to wonder if the latest strains (Auto ultimates, think differents) would benefit from starting in a smaller pot and transplanting on in the same way as photo periods. I always considered Tiering to be a "work around"

I remember reading about it 6 years ago on RIU, and then we got AFN and Full Duplex had a thread called "growing hefty autos in small spaces"

We used to think the open bottom pot allowed the delicate tap root to more easily sink to a good depth which (possibly and maybe probably) has a good link with the height of the plants (which is what we wanted with autos).

Nice of you to stop by - Don't judge me by my little WW's

:d5:

Edit:

Thanks all you guys for stoppiing by and commenting - I hadnt realised this thread had attracted so many nice comments! :D

Eekman .... I WANT those pots!!! I'm having a tree chopped down, but its wayyyy to big!! they would look super cool in my garden. I use chopped trees and pot stands! :)
