Been wondering about this for a while now so decided to just pose the question on Bigsm0's discussion board area.

Are smaller buds of better quality/potency compared to big buds? Part of my newbie logic is a smaller bud has more outer trichs per area than big buds. Big buds on the inside won't have as many potent trichs like what's on the outside of said bud. So small buds are super potent.

Or is that BS? Are the insides of a big bud just layered strata of potent trichs just like the outside and therefore you not only get more yield, but the quality is just as good?

Interesting question. I get high whether it's a big bud or a small bud, so I am glad about that aspect. I've not tested that specific theory as yet. Food for thought for sure.

Without quantifiable testing of big buds versus small buds from the same batch of identical clones, I don’t think there is any way to say one way or the other. Anything else would just be subjective opinions of the persons smoking them. I cannot get testing done where I am at so I will just continue to smoke all buds regardless of size. :smoking:

I like that answer!

The reason I ask is I have 4 plants that should won't pack on any bud weight. They were probably shocked at one time, maybe from topping. They are slow going for one thing, and I don't think they will ever get big buds once the trichs show some amber and they are ready. But what bud that is there is certainly dense and frosty so the quality should be good. But yield will be low, and they could end up taking 80-90 days instead of 70.

Next time you should only top 1/2 of them. I still haven’t topped an autos, besides lollipopping haven’t even done any high stress training at all. I think about this all the time though. Just because you can, does it mean you should? This next grow I’m doing will not have any training whatsoever. Not even bending it tying down.

Next run I will not top any of the plants. I already decided that is the plan this time. Hoping it makes a big difference. LST tie downs yes but nothing too intense like manifolds. And possible lollipopping if any plant looks like it needs it.

I think there’s a difference between big buds vs small buds, and underdeveloped buds. A fully developed small bud or big bud should be good, but if buds are underdeveloped because of shock or low feed strength, then I don’t think it will be up to its potential. Not as strong or smelly as a fully developed bud.

Have you done these strains before? Maybe just how they are.

I think topping is why, but that's not a bad thing. When you top you get more, buds aren't as big but more of them. If you want bigger denser buds I would do as @BigSm0 and do zero training. That goes against everything I do cause of tent size lol. Also supercropping will help with bigger buds, but not all strains like it. What are your strains? Lollipop has made a difference when I have done it too.
