Grow Mediums Canna coco ph and ppm's in run off

Hey there CocoNuts :D

Well I flushed two of them, runoff ph was stil quiet high but ppm's went down.. Did a slurry test on the coco and it showed it the ph at 6.1 so happy enough with that so il let it go and just keep an eye on them

yeah im dealing with the same issue with my canna coco. i just rinsed the next batch of coco and i was getting a initial runoff of 1250ppm so i ran about 250ppm of calmag and kelp throught it until it showed me the same ppm readings coming out. im not gonna worry about the pH. lets see how that works for me and ill let you know

I did a bit of research into this from the indepth canna info pages (you can sign up to canna.com to access them)

Here's a brief quote from them that i pulled and found enlightening

remember you can NOT get accurate results in pH and EC tests on the run-off or drain, it takes the procedure described in the COCO Infopaper for correct results. (Blue Edit: Which is ridiculous - and don't think you'll want to do it to your canna plant!

So the correct proceedure as i recall was to take a "core" sample from the middle. The way they do it is to remove from the pot ... take like a big appled coring knife and push in and grab a bit ...

... then put in a beaker with some water (that presumabley you know the ph of) .... give it a good mix, let it settle and test.

But i don't think i'd personnally go to this effort. ... too scary!!

I assume that if i'm somewhere in the range of 5.8 to 6.1 ... it's okay as canna coco is quite good at buffering ph.

Hope this helps!

yup that's why I'm ignoring runoff pH and just worrying about runoff ppm which straight out the bag was 1250 ppm, too much for my liking lol
Thanks for that info blue! hope all is well with you:pass:

Instead of runoff, measure the PH at the roots, or anywhere in the pot really.
@Waira uses and recommends this
I have one and use it daily.
yup I've had 2 now over the past 2 years and I really like it. very effective tool

Yea it seems a slurry test or root test is the only way to get a true reading, my runoff and slurry test results are miles apart but canna says slurry test and those results are good so il go with that.

That's strange that the ppm's are so high with the coco before you actually do anything with it, I thought it was inert (if that's the right word) and canna says it has nothing in it so you must feed from the word go, so I thought it would've been closer to zero ?

im not sure but it may have been some coco dust and some residual stuff thats in the coco? i have no clue but im glad i got the ppm down. and also glad you got yours straightened out:d5:

Cheers, same to you.. :smoking: Il check my coco the next time when I'm preparing my pots before I plant just to see what I reading I get, be interesting to know..
