hi i am a new grower and also a new member. i hope someone could help me
with this problem, i have a 4 by 2 by 5ft grow tent,
on the celing of the tent i have a charcoal filter attached to a fan, the fan
pulls the stink air from the tent thru the filter out the exhaust which is in my room, the problem is , why does the air stink that is coming out of the exhaust
hose, when the air is passed thru the filter it should be cleaned,
i was reading somewhere on the internet and someone said that the case
might be that i have a filter that is too small, the fan is too big for the filter,
the air is being sucked too fast thru the filter to be filtered. i bought the fan and the filter all one from ebay, you would think that the fan would be the correct size or vise versa, filter too small for the fan, can anyone please
give me any info on this, because my apartment stinks like a pot field,
please help,
thanks mike

There should no no smell with just about any sized filter in that space. I would first check that all the ducting is sealed tight so air is not by passing the filter. You have it so that is the exhaust fan and all exiting air is pushed through the filter, right? Does the tent walls suck in when you turn the fan on? Another possibility is you got a bunk filter and you might want to see if a return or replacement is possible.

Sometimes the charcoal filters don't work as good as activated carbon! But I would check all duct work. And how long have you had it and also how long has it been used?

thanks for responding, the person who sold me the setup, says that i need a speed control
on my fan, air sucking into the filter too fast, not cleaning it properly,
he said that that size of my tent my fan will clear it in 15 seconds,
please let me know what you think

Let's follow some numbers your space is 2*4*5 = 40CF (Cubic feet) 40 CF are turned over 4 times a minute you are moving 40*4=160cfm (Cubic feet per minute). Sounds like a fairly standard 6 inch fan, which should be fine in that space. It should not be moving more air than your filter if activated carbon should handle. I would maybe put some loose cloth on either the intake or exhaust to slow the air and see if that helps. I think that guy's just trying to sell you some other gadget.

Looks like it should be working fine. Torched did the math and that jives with specs from ebay... Maybe restricting it as he said would help. What is the intake? I know I have mine restricted pretty much for temperature regulation, but I am not using HID. Hopefully you can balance the airflow to help with the smell. I really like the little ozone generator. That takes care of it nicely when I open my tent to work on it.

Edit: late's idea is brilliant! That might be just what you need. (saw it after I posted)!
