I have about ten Benjamins to put toward everything as follows... (Redirections and recommendations about these listed products I'm shopping for are highly appreciated.)

It will be in a closet of my new apartment and so far as I have decided... Organic airpotted and LED... no vent outside...

Here's what i'm speculating:
+2x 240W? LEDs... 3 Benjamins
+Tent (4'x4'x6.5'?)... 1 Benjamin
+Assorted feminized's* 1 Benjamin
+Filtration 3 Benjamins
+Pots/soil/nutes 1 Benjamin?
+Ona and Bubblebags 1 Benjamin

the strains i'm eyeing :
Automazar and Blue Automazar
Auto Durban Poison
Snowstorm#2
Cream Caramel
Best Northern Lights I could find...suggestion?

My only real concern is stealth pertaining to scent... if there isn't a problem with this design i would really like to do some Super Skunk Automatic and Diesel Ryders :smokeit:

Oh I need something to check trichomes too...

Anyway I look forward to contributing a journal here but in the meantime I urge readers, please plug your partialities right away to maybe soup up or inspire this work in progress!

Welcome to AfN Doozy

Morning Doozy :) Welcome to AFN!

I'm not sure what a benjamin is  - but the ratios look about right :) definately invest in light and filtration as a solid foundation and worry free grow!
Nice looking strains - seems like you'd like the Dutch Passion and Sweet Seeds strains! :)

Why not pop up a hello over at introductions for a nice warm welcome from our members!

Good luck with project and i'll keep my eyes open for your diary!

Happy growing
Blue ^_^

Hey and welcome!
@blue, my assumption is a benjamin = $100.00 USD.
Things look about right for a nice grow, good budget too, I'd put a few jacksons aside for just because.
Odor control is crucial, I thought I had it covered, but my wife says I don't! I have a carbon filter, an ozone generator, and ONA. The carbon works, I can stick my nose in the airstream from the fan and not smell a thing, the ozone has my basement smelling better than ever, we can still catch a strong wiff of the grow. Like I said I thought I had it under control!!
For trichome inspection, I got one of those 30x and 60x dual lens loupes and it works well for this and only cost a bit over a hamilton!
Peace and happy growing, glad you stopped in and looking forward to following your grow!!

Your light budget looks to be about $200 low ... :Sharing One:

I can add in about 8 cfls too i have the Y-sockets and lamp cords for that, while spotting a good deal on a 3rd LED. I am recirculating the air so i wasn't sure about any ozone... If i can do it safely that would mean potentially some cheesey skunky diesely varieties in my future though wouldn't it? My constraints are really just the smell and electric bill... and the inherent other cares to be taken of the best tasting strains I can manage. Let me just add how excited I am about finding Autoflower Network and sowing seeds here. I hope to turn the lights on around the end of 2/14

Odor is going to be your absolute biggest concern in an apartment, obviously. I would reccomend having one or two ona buckets setup outside of your tent, to kill the smell as it escape when your working on the girls. You should probably make sure your tent is big enough to work inside of. Leaving the tent doors open for more than a few seconds would be risky in an apartment. If your power goes out you will be tucked. It may be wise to invest in a PC battery backup supply to run your on a buckets for a few hours incase the power goes out. Otherwise he smell WILL not only leak into the hallway and floors above/below you. It will be POURING out.

You left out the seed expense which will likely run you in the $100-200 range.

I agree the light budget looks a little short. Definitely don't try to cut corners in this department, either. Probably underestimated by $150ish if your going the led route

Filtration including ducting, aluminum tape, collars, and the ona buckets may be a little short but a solid estimate. Depends on the deals you get more than anything... more is always better in that department especially in an apartment. You will want a 6" fan and filter for that space.

Pots, growing medium, drip trays alone will probably have you around the $100 Mark, NOT including base nutrients and additives such as calmag, silica, etc. Probably another $100 or so.

PH up / Down and a PH test kit is also essential. If you get a digital probe you will also need storage and calibration solutions.

Then there are the extra little expenses. LED lights are rated with a similar intensity to lasers. Shade 5 goggles would be a good investment. After 6 months I started getting migranes, snowy vision in the dark from my HID and LED s. It would be a wise investment for your health.

Then a joulers loupe to inspect trichomes. Micro tip pruning sheers for trimming.

If you are in soil, there's a good chance you may end up with critters in your mix. Product s like gnatrol for fungus gnats, or neem oil may be needed if that's the case.

Humidity control is huge. You can get away with low humidity, but come flower time you will need a dehumidifier as the plants transpire much more. Mold will ruin your crop. Dehumidifiers alone are around $100 if you don't have one.

There's probably more, but all I can think of off the top of my head. With so many variables, it all adds up quick lol

Hey bro exciting list you got there; just wait until you have all that sitting in front of you and it's time to start putting it all together! Super pumped for you!

I had put together a guide awhile back on odor control and reduction methods; feel free to take a look here. It might answer some of your questions about a few of the ideas myself and other members are giving you:

Here's the Guide

I have a few questions and ideas to maybe think about as food for thought:

  • Consider where your closet is in relation to the building you are in. Are you in a bottom floor apartment or the very top? If you have no external ventilation; that may be something to keep in mind based on where you're located. Also consider if your closet shares a space with a neighboring apartment closet. There's going to be a big different on where that smell is going to go and be detected depending on if it's an outside wall at ground level or 3rd story, or whether there's only a mere couple inches of drywall and maybe insulation between you and a potential alert nose.

  • I would highly advise you to get a carbon scrubber with an extraction fan.

ONA will help out, but one of the downsides of essential oils (not ONA specifically) is that they can only bond with certain carbons and hydrocarbons. Since there are so many different strains out there that all produce such a unique variety of terpenes/terpenoids, the effectiveness and mileage of products like ONA vary from plant to plant. I say this as a HUGE ONA user (ONA blocks, concentrates, and gels for nearly 2 years now.) You WILL want carbon filtration.

  • You will want to make sure you appropriate size your intake and exhaust fans for your tent. I actually have a tent similar in size to the one you're stating; I comfortably exhausted a 6" carbon scrubber with a 6" 400 CFM centrifuge fan outside of the tent; while using a 6" inline 240 CFM can fan for my intake.

When you exhaust more air than you take in, you create a negative air pressure space inside the tent. This causes air and odor causing molecules to gravitate towards your exit point, instead of towards cracks in the seams, passive intakes, or other areas of lesser resistance (where you don't want the smells to leak out of.) On my tent; it caused the tent walls to suck in a bit. If I turn off the intake fan, they suck in even more lol (I guess a good way to test the integrity of the frame, eh?)

If you were to reverse the fans and be blowing more air into tent then you are exhausting, you're creating an area of positive air pressure. This is causing air and those odor causing molecules to be blasting out, which means it will move through seams, zipper holes, passive air intakes, where ever it can. This will cause your tent walls to push out, balloon style. Not really sure of a scenario where you would want this to happen.

  • Take a look at strain and grow and smoke reports of the particular strains you are looking at. Sometimes you'll find comments on the smell or if something is particular smelly or overpowering. Heed those warnings on odors on certain strains; you can flood an entire HOUSE with odor with just a few plants; let alone an apartment. I've had seedlings that stunk up a room before.

  • Environmental conditions will effect odor. Terpenes and terpenoids become more volatile as heat increases (especially after being harvested.) This means they evaporate and release into the air. This is one reason why it's important to keep your temperature and humidity levels maintained.

  • Limit the amount you plan on growing per grow. It's so tempting to want to germ them ALL (with an evil laugh!) But the more plants, the more smell. It might be better to do a test run with a few strains before going balls to the wall so you can see for yourself the odor causing effects one or multiple strains causes.

Anyways that's just some food for thought on the smelly odor of smells. Some things I've run into or thought about. Some good ideas from other members here too!

Good karma your way bro! :karma Cloud:

Great information hobbes. I had never considered that the ONA will only bind to certain terpenes and not others. Stuff on the molecular level tends to fly over my head, and is something I never even considered.

I also agree, don't pop all of your beans at once. Fewer plants, larger pots. Make those beans last.

Also at first I ignored the strains you were eyeballing. Skunk and diesel varieties would be ill advised in an apartment setting for your first grow. I would choose something that isn't notorious for being pungent until you are 200%sure you will be able to contain it.

I'll keep this all in consideration and start hunting around for bundle-deals to let me scoop up all that I can and swing a pc battery backup, pest stuff etc. and still have some economy for other incursions, and I see that's the point to have all bases covered, otherwise, what's the use...

I was always comfortable picking up and having those certain phenotypes on me like Blueberry, Orange Bud (snowstorm#2 anyone?), and that Northern Lights this one time (favorite and unknown which breed)... because those were unoffensive and discernible from the obvious stuff... that stuff which makes me want to ditch it anywhere I have it on me... It'll foremost be medicine and so if the first yield is smooth and sizable with enough to last of the "to be announced" strain... then, I wouldn't mind really doing just one stinker...the next grow... if that would pan out. :dunno: I'm going to get some low watt odor eliminating cfls for the rest of the apartment too, if only for the novelty of it...

Twigglius' Candy Kush smoke report explained a scent as "...almost so sweet that it's missing the signature herby scent..." which he wasn't used to but is exactly what I want... I'm looking for these strains I think(?) any suggestions on the search are much appreciated.
