Hi, might sound like a stupid question but when letting water sit to allow the chlorine evaporate, could I put a fine mesh material over it to stop dust getting in and still allow chlorine to evaporate?

Most water is treated using chloramine nowadays, which can be quickly rendered safe by adding 40 mg vitamin C per gallon.

Yeah that's fine, I use a piece of cheese cloth to keep stuff out. As long as air can move back and forth.

Okay cool. I've got some of that but it's not big enough to cover the whole tote. Would it be okay to cut the lid in half and have the other half with the cheese cloth over it? Or would I need the whole tote to be open

You should be fine doing that. I let mine sit for 48 hrs... this spring I'll add an air pump to the setup to get 20 gallons done a little faster.
