Comparison Grow
Fast and Vast Auto/Think Different Auto

Essentially I am following instructions from the book: Growing Autoflowers – A Professor Grow Guide Second Edition by Justin Griswell and Victoria Young. The only thing I have done different is modify the growing medium and the pots I am using.

I am using Fox Farms Ocean Forest, as per the book's recommendation, but amended in the following way: To a 12 quart bag 1) I've added six cups of super coarse perlite, 2) Two cups of General Organics Ancient Forest 0.5 CF Humus Soil Amendment, 3) Three teaspoons of Espoma GL6 Garden Lime Soil Amendment, 4) one half cup of RTI Xtreme Gardening RT4402 Mykos Mycorrhizae, 5) one half cup of Azomite. How necessary this is is debatable. I am growing in 5 gallon Root Pouches setting on 15 liter Aeropot bases that sit in 12” saucers.

For comparison purposes I am following the YouTube posts of a Fast and Vast grow using a 1000 watt Metal Halide and High Pressure Sodium lighting system. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLIxINYpLSeRY5EwQ8E4mhA7jwBwvm5E_7

I am using G8 240watt Full Spectrum and Bloom LED lights in a Secret Jardin DarkRoom II Pro 60 - 24 x 24 x 64 Inches with two 4” inline fans mounted outside of the tent for intake and exhaust respectively. There is a five inch fan in the tent for circulation. The lighting is set on a 24/4 cycle.

The first picture is at 23 days so that it corresponds to the YouTube report # 4. At this point my LED, at 140 watt actual output, is producing a comparable growth rate to the 1000 watt MH. The Fast and Vast Plant is on the left side of the picture. The Think Different is on the right and is significantly larger, at day 23 from seed, than the FAV.

Thank you for your interest.

At day 15 the plants get veg. nutrients. NPK at 20/20/20. I am using Age Old Grow, Bloom and Fish & Seaweed together at 1/2 tsp ea. per gallon every 5 days through day 20. After that I switch to a Bloom mix of 1/2 tsp ea. 5/15/10 NPK using Age Old Bloom and Cutting Edge Solutions Bloom through day 45.

Give them quarter strength each watering of your veg nutes That is what i do starting at day ten bro.

I would double up on your led output when in flowering from my experience one 300 watt actual draw around 150 watts can grow you a 100 gram plant easy angle them. Make sure you have a cal mag supplement ready for C/M deficiencies . I am growing think different right now and fast and vast too. Keep up the great work

I am only watering the plants once every five days. I think the formula is quarter strength. On Saturday I'll post some more pictures. FAV is not growing as good as those under a 1000 watt HID. My G8 240 is only putting out 140 watts, but it might also be this particular plant. I've had better growth with FAV before using the same formula and lighting. The Think Different is growing really well.

Day 35 of FAV and Think Different Grow

The plants are at Day 35 in the following pictures and it is pretty obvious that Joshua's plants on YouTube, with 1000 watt MH, are growing faster. It is kind of messed up because I was hoping to get the taller FAV phenotype and it appears I've gotten the short and squat one this time. This plant also has very dark, small leaves. I've had to place the plant on some blocks to bring it up to the height of the Think Different.

On the right side, the Think Different has really taken off. It is a good ten inches taller than the FAV. I have even tied it down so that it is 3-to-4 inches shorter than it would be normally. It is also flowering faster than the other plant. Phenotypes by Dutch Passion and much more consistent than with this particular strain from Heavyweight Seeds.

General Information

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfazRuVLYlo Diavoloquasar .dq gives a really good introduction to autos. if anyone is interested.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUJ4QxQwVAc Diavoloquasar talks about telling when to harvest by leaf color versus trichomes changing to milk and amber. She claims that most of the leaves dying is a better indication of when to harvest as many autos produce new trichomes continuously.

She also is of the opinion that, at 7-to-9 weeks, is best to begin with Bloom nutrients to obtain maximum growth with some plants. Her claim is that beginning sooner tends to stop vertical growth. Not sure I agree with that though I've heard it before. Aren't the plants genetically predisposed to grow a certain height over time? I am uncertain.

I've read where other people give only one veg. feeding before starting with bloom nutrients and still get three foot plants! The Autoflower Experience” by N.J. Anderson page 38-40. Anderson is using Coco Coir/Perlite and Ionic nutrients though. That is kind of a first level hydroponic grow and might explain the size.

With Griswell's method (what I am using), it is day twenty-five when one begins to use bloom nutrients or slightly over 3 weeks.

I been doing the vast and fast for about a yeasr now and I will just kind of give you my experiances.

I started growing these under an 8 bulb t5 HO and was getting about 3 ounces a plant. I then swithed to the 600 HPS I have and the plants got very very long and lanky and produced half an oz before I realized I was using the HPS and not the MH like I thought I was using. I switched to the MH bulb and changed a few other things and got horrible results, then my 600 ballast blew up. I am assuming that the ballast going bad MAY have had something to do with the horrid results but? not wanting to fork out money for a new 600 at this time I started using my 1k MH and returned to my regular ways except for the feeding which I left at feed, water, feed , water, etc and got about 2.25 ounces per plant. better yes but it should be a lot better since everyone keeps saing more light more bud. and I have gone from 432 to 1K so more in the 7+ range is what I would like to see but honestly don't expect that. the plants would be flat from weight. LOL. my current grow should be done in 7 weeks I believe.

autos are like photos, as in if you do something to them ( crop, burn, remove leaves, whatever ) it stresses them. because of there short lives its best to try to not do or harm/stress them in any way or yields will be reduced.

I start my seeds in those expandale peat cylinders that expand when ya get them wet. the DAY they sprount I put them in there final pots. I use cocoa so for about a week I give them nothing, usually. at 1 week old I feed 1/4 strength nutes and all other stuff but I only give them 1 quart. that's USUALLY good for almost a week. then its half strength for the next week, but I drown them and they go under the 1K ( I veg 3 weeks under t5) . I always feed them half strength nutes. when they get to the point were they need something its just bloom nutes and supplements till harvest. half strength. I no longer give them plain water because under the t5 they always got nutes and I got 3 ounces a plant, so like I said I have about 7 more weeks.

also, just so you know, do not just go by the package as to when you harvest. I have had 20 percent amber at 8 weeks and no amber at 12 weeks. so just watch you trics. let them tell you when to harvest. the genetics are not perfect with these autos.

hope you got a little something from this.

also I have grown in 2, 3 and 5 gallon pots. the 2 gallon seemed to suck but the 3 and 5 I saw little difference. the few in the 5s were actually a bit smaller then the 3 but that could have been genetics just happening to get togeather. and the shorter plants seem to be the ones that produce the most bud. tho I don't know if its cause the plants stop growing early or because I always put the shorter plants in the middle directly under the light.

best of luck to ya and always just have fun.

I also harvest in stages, taking the main cola first and a full chop a week or 2 later depending on my needs.

So you give just 2 veg feeds on day 15 and day 20?
