Hey there, I recently started doing research into getting a setup started and this forum has already been rather helpful, I thought I'd post a thread to ask a couple questions.
1. Do L.E.D grow lights work as well as conventional lighting?
2. Is that odd gel that people put ant farms and house plants in a good medium for a grow
and 3. As i'm more or less completely new to this a couple of your cardinal rules of a grow would be handy.

any help would be much appreciated.

a good led system with the right setup can actually out perform watt for watt with conventional lighting and I cant wait to make the change. and Im not sure what gel your talking about but I wouldnt recomend it, a bag of soil from your local hydro shop will do. Some of the pros will surely be here to give a little more help. posting a grow journal is a great way to get some good specific advice to your grow. Also welcome to AFN man:group:

I myself am an LED grower, I love LED's and yes they perform just as good as your standard HID lighting. BlackStar LED's are always a good bet for your grow room. They have been tried and tested here on AFN. LED's will cut down on power consumption and heat so it is a win win. Just don't fall prey to they REALLY Cheap LED's.

I have no idea what you mean by a "gel used in ant farms" LOL i would definitely stay away from that. IF you are planing on using soil then you should go with something like BlackKow then mix in some perlite.

Another thing you want to consider is odor control, so you will need an inline fan and a carbon filter. This will help kill the smell and exhaust heat build up. Fans are very important in any grow, you always want to have good air circulation, you do not want your air to be stale in the grow room.

You should also invest in a cheap temp and humidity meter. Keeping the temps between 75 to 85 F and Humdity between 40 to 50 percent.

For others to give you better input we need to know more about how you plan on growing... How big is your grow room going to be? How many plants do you plan on growing at one time?

Thanks boss that's pretty damn helpful already.
I guess what I'm after is more or less a micro set-up,
I'm not fully decided on the growspace yet but have a shortlist, almost definitely going to be indoors as I live a bit too far north for most strains to handle the cold.
The spaces i'm looking at are somewhere between 200 and 300 liters (about 18x18x18 if we are talking inches) and would ideally have 8-12 plants in them, if at all possible on a staggered growth cycle.
have no idea if that's too much to want but hey, that's why you ask questions I guess.

Welcome to AFN:smokebuds:. I dont think you are gonna have room for 8 -12 plants. You will definitely need more room and you are gonna need alot of light for that amount of space. Lots of luck getting your grow together and started.:gthumb: When your ready start up a grow journal in the New growers section, you will get a ton of help and advice, from some excellent growers over there. Welcom to the best growmunity there is

Welcome to the Autoflower Network, where No New Grower Is Left Behind. :D :smokebuds:

Take a browse at the links down in my signature and that will get you started other than the solid info that has already been given. And always feel free to ask specific questions.

LEDs are great, just gotta get the right one as already stated.
I know that crazy gel shit you're talking about and I wouldn't try that. I am curious, but still don't recommend it.
Search around your local Ace Hardware and nurseries for Promix BX, Promix HP, Sunshine mix, or Fox Farms Ocean Forest and Light Warrior and Happy Frog. You can maybe find that Fox Farms stuff at Home Depot or something too. If you get the Fox Farms grab a bag of dolomite lime. If you get either of the first three mixes, you won't need any amendments other than nutes(nutrients). And we can get to those later. No nutes needed for the first 2 weeks or so. :D

Take care.

Thanks for the welcome guys, I have no idea what Ace Hardware is or Home Depot mind but i trust such shops as B&Q or The Range are my Country's equivalents.
also, molasses seems to be a pretty important thing to most of the guides i've already read but it's very difficult to find where I am, any substitute would be very nice info to have.
