there's a bunch of variables, but the general rule-of-thumb as i understand it is you're looking for an indica dominant strain, and you'll want to let the trichomes reach a decent percentage of amber colouring.
if i understand what you mean, leaving the plant to essentially die prior to harvesting will be taking it too far. there is a balance, and leaving too long will reduce the potency for sure.
20-30% amber seems a popular choice for a heavier stone.
