Thats what ive always done but was just wondering if the drop in bulb efficiency over time makes it worthwhile changing them

yes, they drop a lot very quickly. First of all, never touch the bulb with your bare fingers. It's been a while since I used hps and that was only 12/12 for photos. I replaced after 3 crops. I think it was about 2800 hours. But check the manufacturer claim and at least half it. If I remember, my bulb was claimed at 6000 hours.

Yeah I think I'm about due a change, I've also acquired a 180w marshydro ufo. So I will be mixing it up with the hps
