Today is the first day both have popped above the soil. Each seed was lightly pressed into the Jiffy starter mix, modestly watered (distilled), and placed in their home 3 days ago. I kept a constant vigil and was able to keep them moist but not soaked and am now being rewarded with both above ground.

I have poured over FD's outstanding how to, drawing knowledge and inspiration. I have followed his recipe for grow medium and will be tiering the peat pots into 2 gallon felt pots. I will use bubbled fish tank and lake water (depending on freeze situation) as the regular watering goodness and the basis for my tea. Tea recipe is a take on FD's. I have not made a decision beyond the tea for supplemental nutrients and would welcome suggestions.

I will post pictures post weekend, just wanted the day on record I guess :D

Well thanks to all for the help given already, the clock is on!

Cheers

Will

Sounds like your off to a good start Will :smokeit:

I can tell ya am doing two easy Ryder's side by side to see... Airpot or smartpot... It's a toss up will post pics tomorrow but the airpot plant is Definetly taller and I believe will yield more than the smart pot one... I think auto like pots that are higher than shorter and wider... Maybe consider using 1 airpot and 1 felt and see for yourself... What type of lighting are you going to be using? they raised above the ground!!! One of the hardest part of the grow... Now just maintain and love them as you are now and they will shower you with love back soon enough... CONGRATS on getting your first grow started! Your going to love it!

Day 3 above soil

Thanks Greenthumper and Yodabuds, hope you and yours all had a great holiday!

Yoda, I see what you are getting at with a side by side on the container types. I was only able to obtain the felt this go round but would be willing to gather some data on the next. Keep us posted on what you see in your grow...if your theory holds true over several grows thats a handy bit of info to have going in :)

To answer your questions I am using a 135 Blackstar along with 2 6400k CFLS for the first few weeks. Will swap with a couple 2700k bulbs. I will attach a pic from the plants perspective.

A smidge of seaweed (0-0-1) added to the water for a bit of color :)

In my limited experience they look to be doing ok...someone tell me if you see otherwise :)

Cheers!

I would have to agree, you have a green thumb! I have been thinking about using those pete-moss starters as they appeal to me. You are starting off great in my opinion! Personally, I would lower the cfl's to about 5" from tops depending on temps. I am really glad another grower is among us.

Everything you've got going on looks fine man...nice clean little rig!

As alley said, just maybe drop the CFL's temps permitting...

Also, I have limited experience with autos, and ZERO experience with autos indoors, however...in general, the plant itself will somewhat conform to the size/shape of its' root mass. So tall skinny container:tall skinny root mass:tall skinny plants. Same goes with shorter and wider obviously...now pure sativas are gonna reach for the sky no matter WHAT the fuck you do, but hey...

Looking good man! What medium are you using and what nutes? Good luck and let us know if you need anything. :D :toke:

Thanks again all for the input and support! You're a good bunch!

Alley I have started moving the lights down a bit each day...thanks for the push to do so. It's easy to get a bit apprehensive about lights and how close they are :)

Squid I am using FD's medium from the hefty autos tutorial. I started them in the peat pots with jiffy mix due to the main medium being to hot for seedlings. Instead of waiting to cut the bottom and tier in after a few inches of growth I just cut the bottom out right off the bat and tucked it into its new home. My goal was to prevent burning and not risk disturbing the root system. As far as nutes my plan right now was to use FD's tea (from the same tutorial). Initially I have added a touch of seaweed (0-0-1) to some fish tank water, adjusted Ph, and quenched the ladies thirst.

Apicalmeristem I am glad to see your lady above soil! How's she doing for you?

I will post new pics in a few days...so far so good. The 2nd set of leaves has started coming in very nicely. While I don't have a fan in there I do have good air flow and I gently flick the seedling several times a day to build strength in the stalk.
