New Grower donkeykong's grow cabinet

Hey donkeykong, I'm thinking of moving your thread to the new grower's forum..I think you'll get some more action, what do you think bud.

No issue with that at all, go ahead if you think it has a better home there :)

hi skunky,

thanks for your comments pretty useful !
Yes, I try to do some research of course, save asking every single dumb question to you guys, as helpful as you :)

Im in UK btw. Benn having a look at the light requirements for photosynthesis, good to know a stock CFL could carry through the first steps, enough of the components to make it happen.
Going to have a think about it, probably like many of my projects it'll end up more expensive than I wanted on day 1, but that's the learning process too. LED I think. One thing I have learnt over the years is sometimes better to splash out on the right tool for the job rather than spend thrice as much trying everything that doesn't work first... :)

you will have no problem finding companies to ship there and some leds links here you could check out in your search

one thing is in the area you doing it in you can get a fairly inexpensive light w/ slightly less penetration focused and a broader lens angle for canopy coverage
but for smaller/medium smaller plants you will be able to still get them close enough for good coverage
maybe a couple smaller lights so you can adjust dif heights and angle one slightly to cover a monster plant better but it would cost a little more to do it like that than one larger more powerful light
good luck in you hunts
might want to look at convection cfl's for your space they run real cool and do good coverage at 12" away and say you can run them 6-8" to better penetration but reduce coverage of course
but in smaller area they offer more balanced spread of spectrum than a led does at closer distances
you have decient height but even a 5' w/ light/container space from light to plant and plant height itself that area will reduce quickly if you need a light that recommends being 16-24" away
happy hunting

well I see ya already got your weight up on posts:)
congrats

yeah less than 20 bucks in cfl's for painters spot light and socket splitters and bulbs will do a GOOD job till your decision is made and delivered for their larger growth to jump w/ your new decision

the cost is always more up front to save for sure

if you know you intend on smoking it will pay for itself for SURE especially once one gets the hang of things and it sorta becomes like second nature from doing it a while:)

I would say at one point you would want to go led or induction cfl due to height issues on later grows for sure

Hi Donkey Kong & Skunky Smurf..The more posts i read on here the more educated and anxious i get! .. like a kid in the candy store :) sorry to just pop in un post related, just wanted to let you 2 know, that im learning and like a train wreck..i just cant look away! lol i'm starting to take pics of my set-up as i put it together, and am gonna try to do a journal also. I feel like im a creepy lurker if i don't chime in once in a while. peace and keep it up!

No worries. you know what its my first grow so I think im twice as excited as some of the others cos of that alone. And its a whole lot more fun with others involved rather than tickering in solitude somewhere.
Im trying to learn quick too, take on board some good advice and hopefully I can get a half decent result !
It will be nice to see your journal also, how it all comes together and how it results, experiences shared.

Hi Guys, here a question if someone can tell me worth doing?

As you guys kindly left me some info about lighting, and I started to set about looking things up on lamps. Also if I understood right, it seems that in very early days, a more regular lamp will do just fine ? When you mention CFL is it the regular kind of bulbs or special grow ones ?
Im thinking I do want to LED it, but since I just came back from hols, I'll splash out next month, since I can imagine spending several hundred pounds. I think I can justify it over a longer period of time assuming i can actually get some decent smoke out of it. I suppose this comp limits the plant somewhat and when all the fun is over and some lessons learned I can still have a nice lamp to use on some bigger pots.

So Im wondering if regular CFL's work OK, if LED spotlights will also be Ok in the early days? I have some left over from my dads house, and a few here since we LED spotlighted bits of his house after renovation last yr. I think there are spare warm white and pure white, maybe I pull one out of a fitting for a little while :)

Plan along that line could be to allow one 4W LED spotlight to each of my five plants, so five GU10's in there should be plenty "bright" but hopefully decent enough spectrum for the little plants.
That would give me a bit more time to get my head around some local suppliers of a proper LED growlamp, then add it in later. Maybe switch the spots over to side or up-lighting at that point also.
Do you think its a reasonable plan, and if so, how long do you reckon I will have bought myself for acquiring a nice grow light ?

cheers!

I think the pure white will be around 4800 or 5000 Kelvin, warm white at 3200 or thereabouts.
Also, i would like to give my plants a good chance in the comp, so if its just a better idea to just dive in to a more powerful lamp (or two) then so be it, the money is there to be spent Im just being with my usual habit about spacing bigger spends out a bit :)

Hey dude, glad you made your post count dude, the comp gonna be fun.

'Fraid I can't help you with LED info (and everyones chatting in the comp thread atm) but someone will pop in very soon to help you.

If I remember correctly your in the UK same as me. My advice would be to do as I did and get down to Morrisons and grab a 30w energy saver bulb and an attachable holder (two or three would be better).
You'll be surprised at what they can achieve and if your planning on upgrading halfway through your grow they'll do you well until then. Perfect lights for veg imo.

Anyways, good luck dude, and hang tight, someone will be here soon.

Peace
