Hey folks. This here's gonna be my journal for my first grow. The stats for the grow are as follows:

35-gallon Rubbermaid tote. Painted white w/120mm speed-controlled PC fan for exhaust blowing through a homemade carbon filter. Starting with one bean in kind soil topped with a 60/40 peat moss + perlite mix. 180w 6500k for veg & 168w 2700 for flower.

Only one problem. I haven't been able to test-run my setup, because I ran into a problem with my passive exhaust - namely, how in the hell to light-trap it. This is what my setup looks like right now:

The intake is roughly 7"x4". I went with a passive intake for a few reasons - ease of construction and the fact that I'm poor as hell and don't have any more money to put into this build. I tried building a couple different light-baffle ideas and just couldn't make it work. I would love some advice, because I am dying to get a bean popped and growing. Strong preference for solutions that can be accomplished with cardboard and duct tape, lol.

What size container will you be growing in? Also...why the peat/perlite, and not a regular organic soil (roots organic, etc)?

The reason I ask....I read ALOT about kind soil before I pulled the trigger. In my research, I found the people that had problems growing this way didn't follow the manufacturers directions (although some did their own thing and had wild success).

I've had good results with the Kind Soil based upon the directions provided. I'm assuming you know something I may not..which is why I ask.

4gal rectangular sterilite tub that I'll probably only fill to about 3gal. I saw a really slick PC case grow awhile back that used a window planter, and the grower was able to pull off a really impressive SOG by getting it to veg horizontally with some aggressive LST. Figured I'd do my best to emulate that to make the most of my limited headroom.

As for the peat & perlite - partly cost, partly availability, partly hearing from others who did well with it. :)

Any thought on the light trap conundrum?

Nothing concrete....although off the top of my head...I'm thinking some type of flap with the opening facing down.... or a piece of flexible vent hose with an S curve in it....come to think of it...thats exactly what I would do, probably.

Sorry I can't be of more help, pal.

Hey. I guess you could do something like this out of cardboard and ductape:

as long as the interior is not reflective, it should work pretty well.

I would try something made out of cardboard and glue and paint the inside flat black. cardboard can be more reflective than it looks and tape is unless it is like a grip tape. You will need at least four inserts to block the light more would be better.

Yeah, I've tried to build something like that. Just can't get it right so far. Back to the drawing board for a bit I guess. Thanks y'all.

If your problem is the assembly, you could replace the slots with holes. Like that:

It would probably be easier to assemble. Build a box out of cardboard and ductapte, make the inserts, punch holes in them, glue them inside the box then make a lid and ductape it when you are finished with the insides of the light trap.
