Grow Mediums dwc grow - ec question

If i had to deal with high water PPM's, then i would start everything off at 1/4 strength, PH the water, then add to system. Check in 12 hours if PPM's have gone down or up...

If you water in a nute solution that is 200PPM for example and you check in 12 hours. If the PPM/ec is dropped just pour a small amount of water out into a cup, add more nute solution to cup then dump back into the system. If it has shot up then just dilute the nute soltuion down a bit.

The main reason i seen people get in trouble with hydro is when they loose control. Staying on top of things like PPM's, Temps and PH is key, imo. If you check it regularly and make sure its not doing wild swings then you could be fine.

What i'm hearing you say is i should try to keep it at 0,8-0,9 ec with very low doses of nutes for the first week or so?

Yea just do a light mix of your Veg nutes with calmag, remember in hydro Less is more.

What i do... and this is my situation, i grow dwc... i put in my calmag first then my silicate, then my Veg a+b Nutes, Then i add in 1/8th of a teaspoon of epsom salt. Then PH the water..

Week 1 about 150PPM
Week 2 about 200 to 250PPM
Week 3 about 300 to 350 PPM
Week 4 about 400 to 450 PPM

A general Rule of thumb... Stay in thous ranges with your veg and you should be fine... But adjust accordingly. Let the plants tell you what they need... If getting light color up the N a tad bit... Start to see purpling... up the Mag a bit... Never go to far one way with nutes... small adjustments then let it sit and see what happens. My Blue dream that i have growing.... its way beyond the normal veg PPM's in week 7 of veg i had her up to 600PPM. Its a heavy feeder from my experience.

What nutrient lineup are you using?

I use Skunk Labs Horticulure nutes

hello guys, i am starting my first dwc up with 2 20 liter buckets with 30l of air going through each per minute.

my problem is i happen to live in an area where the tap water is exceptionally loaded, so my ec levels right out of the tap is 0,6-0,7.

i am starting them out with a seedling feed (vitalink - plant start), and my question is, how high do you think i could set the ec? the plants are very young, first set of leaves just showing.

At the very least, you need to filter that water thru a GOOD 2 stage filter. It took me months to figure out that my water was killing my plants! An option is to cut your tap water with distilled, 3 parts distilled to one part tap water. Personally 'd invest in an RO unit. Mine was $74 shipped. A decent under the counter filter unit is about $40.

RO water cured my drifting PH problems too, at least its that way with the nutes I use. My ph stayed 5.9 for a week!

After you fix your water problem, start with an ec of .4-.5 ( I too use the ppm scale, my ppms for seedlings young plants is 2500-300, inclodung 90 ppms of cal/mag. At the third set of leaves, raise your ec to 1-1.2

Hey Lykaboss, I just read you should always add and mix your silica first and let it set a couple minutes Adding after any other nute is added can cause lockout., as the silica will bond to the nutes.

what i did, was mix 5 liter RO water with 11 liter tap water, so it evened out at a bit lower than 0,5 ec. i upped the ec to 0,8 with Rhizotonic and plant start feed, and ph set to 5,7. i will be monitoring them a few times a day from now on.

i just checked them now, and the ph had risen to 6,1-6,2. i have adjusted the ph to 5,7 now and will be monitoring it more often from now on to make sure it wont fluctuate that high again.
the EC has risen to 0,85 for some reason, it will be lowered in an hour or so.

I have however, encountered a new problem. the temp in my bucket is too high. Does anybody have a good cheap solution?

Add a small frozen water bottle to your bucket. It will have to be changed on a regular basis but it will help to get the temp down a prevent root rot.
