Hey All,

I'm wondering if someone could answer a question I have about using egg shells as a calcium suplement. I've read somewere here that you could use discarded egg shells to amend your soil. How do you prepare the shells and do you have to add them to the soil before you pot your plant or can you add them after with your nutrients? Also, what is the recommended ratio of calcium to feeding with liquid fertilizer or to the soil? I have the same question regarding epsom salts. Everyone always implies I have a Cal-Mag defiency in my plants. Just trying to figure out my micro and macro nutrient breakdown.

Thank's

I've heard they take a long time to break down and be useful. That you have to pulverize them

Hey SuperFreak, I use eggshells in my soil mix. I rinse them then let them dry (some put them in the oven for a while but I haven't found that necessary) and then grind them with a coffee grinder. They turn into a powder then. You could also use a mortar and pestle.

I add them before I plant, which is also when I add my soil amendments. Then I let the mix cook/compost for 4-6 weeks to let the nutrients cycle and become available to the plant. They do take their time breaking down but that's a positive for me since I reuse my mix.

Thanks Everyone,

I thought I would ask this question before I bought some Cal-Mag. My Northern Light has broken ground and before I see any calcium deficiency, not to say that I will, I would like to make sure she has all she needs to thrive. I know that microbes have to break down organic matter before it can be readily available to the plant. My soilless media is Shultz with extra perlite for additional aeration . I've used it before with much success. I always here "add some Cal-Mag, your plant looks yellow ". My outdoor plant started out pale green when I hardened her off and placed her out in my backyard, but with a weekly feeding of high Nitrogen nutrients, she is as green as Kermit the frog. Anyone have a proper feeding regiment for my little Auto? Just want to nip this in the bud(no pun intended)before I run into any type of nutrient defiency. From my understanding a good soilless mixture should be sufficient for at least to three weeks.

Thanks in advance.

The Freak.

maan If yer doing a soil mix man...dry up a bunch of eggshells grind em up with a rock er whatever, add some dried crabshell or similar thin shells with trace minerals and ...ad a cpl pinches of gypsum and grind all that up with a fist full of coco or comparable ,stir that up n fluff into your soil and you'll have more cal n goodness in yer soil than you'll know.. grind it all together..not powder but ground up some..mixed n spread in yer soil..POW!! water in with a cal mag to sit n blend fer a few weeks..bam!!

id personally add a small box of clean baby food dried cereal too.for added stuff that im not goning into at the moment cuz its a long yapping LOL!!
