Just be sure to buy a pocket scope, loupe or digital usb camera to check trichomes and all will reveal itself. There is no set time for trichomes changing color.

Every strain is different. Some don't amber at all. The plants do their thing in their own time. First stage is clear, then cloudy/milky, then they start turning amber. A magnifying glass or jewelers loupe with a led light on it will definitely help you out. When to harvest, depends on how you like your smoke. I harvest at about 30%amber. Amber gives the couch lock effect, but also remember amber is a sign the plant will start losing potency. I find 30% is perfect for me.
