So a while back I had made the decision to start a small grow in a tent with my tax returns etc..... Unfortunately a little bit of life popped up and that money got burnt up with real responsibilities. I had already purchased the seeds and had a bit of equipment laying around, so I decided that I would play around a bit. I've taken 2 of the ten seeds I purchased and put them to germ just so I can get some relative growing experience under my belt. That was 35 days ago.

Since I wasn't planning on being super serious and am lacking a lot of more quality equipment and products that would make for a truly solid grow, I neglected to start a grow journal here. In retrospect I probably should have, if for nothing else than to have the prying eyes of the pro's upon my babies.

The strain I am running is Afghan from Buydutchseeds.com (photo and non-feminized). From what the site says, its a pure Indica strain that should only get about 2-3 feet max which is perfect for the closet space I have available (roughly 2'w x 4'L x 5'H) They are in one and a half gallon pots with a 70/30 mix of Happy Frog and Perlite. Unfortunately I do not have a ph pen as of yet but my tap water tested at 7 the last time I had it tested so I am keeping my fingers crossed. They are getting air bubbled tap water that has sat for at least 24 hrs prior to use.

I am currently running them under 5 fluorescent plant/aquarium bulbs that you can get at any pet store and two 23w cfl's on a 20/4 timer. The room is flat white with mylar coating on some of it ( my wife was able to find a bunch of mylar wrapping paper on clearance yay!) I am currently feeding them 1/2 dose miracle grow ( started at a 1/4 dose and am working up and yes, yes I know the stuff is horrible). Luckily the strain is noted for being particularly receptive to chemical nutrients and have yet to notice any serious chemical burn issues.

I started to LST them once they hit the fourth node and they seem to be taking to that particularly well. Trying to keep them short as to get the most out of the limited space I have. Its still winterish here so temps haven't been an issue yet, a box fan on low and an electric space heater across the closet have kept temps and air flow pretty good. Rarely reaches 80 F during the day (usually right around 75) and drops to roughly 65 at night. Once it gets warmer ill remove the heater and air condition the room the closet is in so the passive intake should help keep it cool.

Hopefully the attachments im trying to toss on here work and you guys can get a visual on all this jazz im talking about. I haven't had any major issues yet (knock on wood ) and can only hope the rest of the process goes as smoothly.

I do have a few questions though for those out there who may be familiar with the strain and photos in general. This is my first grow and I am unsure as to how long I should let these babies veg before I flip them to flower. The site I purchased the seeds from says they have a 55 day flowering time but I am assuming that means 55 days from preflower not 55 days total growth time. any information regarding that would be greatly appreciated.

Also while LST'ing is it ok to remove larger fan leaves that are shadowing the new nodes that are starting to grow upward (the nodes uncovered by the lst process that we are trying to get more light to in the first place)? Im not saying defoliate intensively just select pruning around shadowed nodes to improve light penetration through the canopy. Just wondering because (like an idiot before asking) I removed one fan leave that was majorly shadowing a growing node and two that were being pushed down onto the soil due to the lst process causing them to also majorly shadow two other nodes. I have only done this to one of the two plants so far. I just did this today so I haven't had time yet to notice any adverse effects.

If I have any other questions (and im sure I will) Ill throw them up here. Ill try to keep up with weekly pics from here on out the rest of the grow just to feed the need for bud porn hehe. Also a preemptive THANKS to anyone responding to my noobness, your experience is greatly appreciated. Everything I have learned about growing I have learned here on AFN.

Thanks for taking the time to stop by guys and heres hoping I can get a little bud for my time out of this. Even if I don't Ive had a blast so far with my little guys so I guess that makes it worth it regardless =)

Your girls are lookin healthy. I would use bigger pots and top the plant to stop it from getting too tall. Then it will bush out instead of growing up. You are correct about 55 days being just the time it takes to flower after vegitative growth.
With indicas I give them 2 - 3 weeks for the seedlings stage then 30 day minimum veg then switch to 12/12 and flower for 60 - 75 days because you also get 1 - 2 weeks of preflowering.
I have an afghan in my breeding project thread if you wanna check it out. Good luck bro!

are ya winded...lol :howdy:

you are exactly rite on lst, cut back fan leaves just enough to let the lite in...

preflower does not count in the flowering time and can take any where from 3days to 2 weks...depending on the strain...:toke:

lookin good btw:smokebuds:

Looks good . Welcome and good luck

Hey Nugget!

I just thought I'd weigh in. I don't have much experience at all either but as Smashed has said, cutting back some fan leaves is fine. I'm sure one won't kill her :D

I more just wanted to say good luck with everything. I love the DIY setup, have you had a chance to think about how you'll upgrade once you can?

@evol... I have 3 gallon pots but money was so tight that I had only enough soil and perlite pre purchased to fill out the 1 1/2 gallon pots I had laying around, hence the " on the cheap" originally it was supposed to be 6 ladies in 50/50 happyfrog / ocean forest with perlite mix on fox farm nutes. but real life bit me in the ass yet again! Thanks for the specifics on veg time and the suggestions regarding topping. Although I have heard mixed reviews about that process and the stress it can cause to the girls so I opted to LST instead. My next run I will most likely experiment and do a couple topped a couple lst'd. Thanks for the kind words and oh yea and I couldn't find your afghans in your sig link, am i just blind?

@ smashed... LOL I do tend to get a little bit long winded in my posts. I enjoy writing and more than enjoy MJ. So when the two come together I tend to gush. Thanks for the confirmation regarding the LST and the info about cycles!

@eflow....Thanks bud been here lurking on AFN sponging in as much info as possible for months. Money is about the only thing keeping me from going nuts with this hobby (says everyone on AFN I'm sure hehe). Growing plants period has always been enjoyable for me, growing ones that give the greatest gift to mankind has been an incredibly rewarding experience so far.

Glad to see that no one has given me an " OMG WTF ARE YOU DOING TO THOSE GIRLS!" I was a bit nervous how things were going, given the lack of a proper light setup. Here is hoping it stays that way lol. Thanks to everyone so far for the input so far and please dont hesitate to give me a "WTF ARE YOU DOING" if it is warranted, I am here to learn and soak in info from far more experienced people, which 99% of you are!

@Sir Cunning... thanks for the kind words man, while DIY was not my initial choice it was kind of a fun little adventure piecing it all together. Before life issues came up I had done a ton of research as to what i was going to setup to the point that i had it already pre carted on amazon lol. The original plan was a 3' x 3' x 6' tent with a 600w digital MH/HPS with an air cooled hood. Carbon filter with a 6 inch fan and speed controller for extraction and passive intake. a small clip fan on the side of the tent directly beneath the light but above the colas to assist with light heat dispersion. 3 gallon pots with 50/50 happyfrog / ocean forest and fox farm nutes, and an Oakton eco testr PH pen ( which is still going to happen the second I come across a spare 60$ since PH is not to be messed with, it really is my biggest fear of fault for this run). Everything in due time. At this point I'll have to gather the items piece meal but I'm ok with that, I'll just keep playing in my closet until then.

Nice DIY. Since there only 2 regs, I would probably do a lil shorter veg time incase odds don't play out

OK Day 38 update incoming!

So i was able to scrounge up 60$ and just now ordered my PH pen, an HM digital PH-80. Also picked up a general hydroponics GH1514 PH control kit, and 7.0 buffering solution. Should be here in about a week, cant freaking wait!:booya: It'll be nice to really dial in the ph to ensure maximum uptake of nutes.

So question time folks! I cant afford any cal/mag at the moment but i do have unsulphered molasses and Epsom salt (which the awesome crew at AFN informed me about :D). Ive been considering using it as a supplement to the nutes I have, (MGrow unfortunately but i cant afford the good stuff right now). The recommended dosage I was told is 1 tbsp / gal of each. Should i reduce this like we do with nutes at first just to ensure no overdosing or do these natural items not adversely effect the plants? Im just leary of dumping full dose anything into my girls without consult first. The next question is, do I supplement this on the same day as my feeding or do i do it on the off waterings between feedings, and should this be something that is skipped over once and a while? I guess where im going with this is that im just really unclear about the dosing and frequency of dosing with this and dont wanna hurt my girls.

The next question involves the attachments below, two of the pics are close ups of my girls stems. Is what I am seeing coming up at the node split points the beginning of preflower? Just wondering since these are my first and would like to confirm or reject my suspicions. Also remember these are photos not autos.

Other than that things seem to be going pretty smooth and im happy with the results as of now. If you guys notice anything i should be alarmed about in the pics feel free to let me know! Thanks for all the help guys!

Look very good man. Work with what we've got, that's what it's all about.

No those are not pre-flowers, those are on all marijuana plants regardless of sex. They're called spicules. Pre-flowers differ in shape and color from spicules.
