I searched to see whether this has been dealt with, and got nothing, so here is my problem.

When I place a smilie in a message, more often than not, it ends up in the wrong place, not where the cursor was very carefully left before activating the smilie window. This has been a consistent pattern since I started on AFN last year.

I am on a Windows 10 laptop using Firefox if that is relevant. One detail that may provide a clue is that if I move my pointer away from the cursor up to the location of the smilie icon, and then hit the space bar a couple times before opening the smilie window and choosing a smilie, this seems to defeat the problem. Somehow the addition of the spaces while the pointer is out of the message body fixes the confusion over location.

If there is a way I can fix this, I would like to know. If this thread is in the wrong place, my apologies.

There's a few things about the text field operations in this new software that are fucking irritating as hell, and that is one of them!
You can't double space between sentences either which is just lame....or space more than once between emoti's...
You could grab and drag an emoti' to a new location too before, now it seems to work on occasion only?
I don't know what the deal is OF, or if it can be altered......

Thanks for the feedback Waira, all much as I suspected. I have tried to cut and paste, and to select and drag emojiis multiple times, but it has never worked once for me. Inserting a couple spaces before selecting the emojii window seems to defeat the thing, so I guess that will have to do. It is also possible to just drag all the text and place it before the emojii, but that is more hassle than just doing the spaces.

Older, I'll have to look into this but I do know what you are talking about, as I have experienced this myself, BUT, I haven't actually had it happen now for quite some time (using Edge and Chrome.)

I'll have to see if it's browser specific or something we can tweak. But it's on the radar.

Okay, I'm going to floor you with this one. When I worked for Growers Network, I had multiple people on my ass ALL THE TIME for putting double spaces after periods. I told them "that's correct grammar, that's how I was taught all my life." And a few guys told me "no, we were taught our entire life it's a single space."

So it may not be a flaw, but someone's WRONG interpretation of where that fuckin double space belongs  Seriously though, I think there may be some teachings in education that say a single space is the correct method, versus some saying double spacing is.

Anyway. Just my conspiracy theory on the matter.

And again with the emoji's, may apply same concept.

In fact I just looked up a post from one of the developers of our forum software:

Only ever one.

The second is completely superfluous in the modern day. Professional typographers agree. The best practice has been one space for over 100 years. What caused the two space practice to creep back in was, of course, typewriters and early computers/printers. Monospaced lettering needed an extra space to improve readability.

Now it is never needed and should never be used. But unfortunately there's a large portion of people who have been taught that double spaces are correct and sadly there are people who still assert it as best practice. But it isn't.

Oi. Us double spacers aren't going to get much love on this one.

Thanks for the reply SonofHobbes, much appreciated. I'm with you on double space after a period, I guess that gives away my age, if my moniker didn't. I actually was not aware that single space was part of anyone's serious grammar instruction. I wouldn't dare get into usage of commas.

Anyway, good luck if you dig on the emojii thing. Don't spend too much frustration on it, I have figured a workaround that doesn't involve too much hassle - you guys spend enough time keeping this boat afloat, I didn't intend to make it an even bigger job. I confess that my frustration got the better of me briefly. Just long enough to speak up.

Are you able to try a different browser to see if it's happening with the others? Might help with process of elimination.

This was years back, but there was a Chrome update that just BORKED the shit out of some of code that Xenforo used to display certain things, and there was simply nothing we could do (because it was on the browser side, not ours.) We had to just wait until the next patch before it finally resolved itself.

The least I could do to help is try Edge, which I have on my computer. I will try a reply on that browser, and insert emojiis to see what happens.

ok, here we go, this is from Edge. I will need to add some text to make things behave, or misbehave, so bear with me. Unless I have multiple sentences, the problem can't happen as readily. Well there is the first one in the right place, so lets continue this mischief and give it another chance to screw up. Here should be the second emojii::pighug:So far, so good. Lets try it again.:pass:Good again. Starting to look Firefox specific. I will go back in the text :haha:and place a few more :headbang:to see if it still behaves. Ok, it seems that on Edge, the problem does not come up, at least not six times in a row.

Ah well, Firefox plays less games with my info, so I will just use the work around.

Thanks for the responses Son of Hobbes. The thoughtful responses to my concern is one more reason why I find AFN an exceptional community. Thanks for the great work.
