Sorry to hear about the bugs . I am lucky . I don't seem to have that problem and I make my soil out doors . i do have long cook times and I do get Curl grubs , but

I don't mind them as the act like great bloody big worms and are easy to pick out of the soil . next season I am thing about using them to my advantage .

That is lucky. Most larger grubs like that become beetles. The curled white grubs here become 'june bugs' as adults. They feed on roots too.

Yes, absolutely. Foxfarm had a whole batch go out with gnats last year. I've heard of it in other soils too. They are hard to see in the wild, but in pots it unmistakable. I would be surprised if they don't live in alaska too.


I'm not worried about it. I have everything I need to keep them at a controlled level. I don't mind sharing space, as long as my plant is healthy.

Earth Worm Castings. My batches are typically 6 months or older.
There must be some predator mites in it. I use leaf mold as a base and copious amounts of kelp meal. Kelp is a secret ingredient I believe is essential for the smaller elements like manganese and copper.

Thanks for reading. I just hope it's not too hot, or something... pH off... who knows. I don't really feel like doing a run off test. I probably should though in a day or two before I plant the girls.

Another drawback is that there are unknown other critters from the garden soil I added. I don't expect a problem but you never know.

Benefits are that I have a ton of the stuff left still. I will be mixing with it all spring. I have decided to start growing trees for sale. The time to plant a tree being yesterday and all, I'm already late. I think total cost was 150 bucks, and I could double it at any time with only about twenty more investment. I should get a ton of plants going for that.

One thing i love about organic is if the soil needs more of something its normally open the fridge for fruit or vegetables containing natures building blocks like calcium or magnesium. We all try and give our kids a balanced diet so why not our grows. A min in a nutra blender with a bit of coconut water and green tea breaks down most anything without leaving it in to gets bugs etc.

I treat my gardens that way mostly, the trick is knowing the NPK values and how your veggies will change the pH. All that is available knowledge, but not necessarily common knowledge. I've moved from ammending soil with nutes to creating batches of soil. It saves me lots of money, and far better results. Now if I just had a tractor or some kids to move the stuff around!

you bet it is. kelp is amazing for micros. Using these techniques indoors is new for me. But I use every single leaf that falls on property for soil or mulch. I don't have enough for making large batches of leaf mould soil though. I will get pickup load of composted yard wastes for 20 bucks instead. I would love to use worms, but the fancy worm bins are too expensive. I can make one, but then it may not be portable and they die off in the winter.

I made one from wood but you don't need an expensive bin. I have the wooden worm bin but I also use a 50 gallon smart pot. These smart pots work better than the expensive bins because they get more air flow.

@Rev. Green Genes El cheapo worm bin . I get this from the local Hardware store when on special , $20 each and work great . I poke a heap of holes in them with a soldering iron . Takes a bit of time but just sit down with a joint and a beer and get to it . I like them because I can have different soils in them and are easy to move around .

The great news is that I don't see any live gnats, only a few dead suckers that made it through the poison sand pits. Nothing on the sticky traps. So I think the plan worked, they are mostly trapped in there and can not breed underground.

I will not declare victory for 2 weeks, but it looks promising.

2 out of three beans popped on 4/20, pretty good luck so far.
