I'm thinking about hanging the whole plant mostly unmanicured except for the big fan leaves and non frosty leaves. In the past I chopped it down manicured the the whole plant and hung them by the branches. Has anyone done both? Which way do you think works best? Pros & cons of both?

Harvest & Curing Hanging the whole plant unmanicured or hanging manicured branches?

Glad to see you made it to harvest time!
I am by no means a pro here but I will give my thoughts for you, as to what I experienced.
When I chopped them down and manicured all of the buds individually I noticed that they air dried faster than I wanted them to. So this time around I did a test.
I had 2 girls, and the first I cut up the same way as my first grow, all at once, The next plant I manicured alsmost all of the way, but left the buds on the branches.
I noticed the buds are drying slower this time - Which I want to have happen. I think leaving the branches on or keeping the whole plant in tact will provide a slower dry.
When they are fully dried and ready (snapping of the stem, not bendy) I clip the buds off into my curing jar. I think if I slow the air drying down , it will bring out a better smoke
and cure when it comes to jar time. There is most likely a lot of info about this here on AFN. I hope my insight helps, and good luck to you Brother,

Hanging the complete plant....either with or without sunleaves, slows or extends the drying process some...in hot and dry conditions it can help the buds NOT DRY TOO FAST...but in humid environments it can be a problem...that is when taking the buds off the plant carcass [the central stem and branches, I mean] is advisable.
It's not uncommon for me to hang one plant and trim bud off the rest when I harvest....sometimes the hanging plant's buds are much better than the trimmed buds....sometimes not....I really should keep more notes on the process when I do it next for some solid data...
Ultimately it's a matter of conditions and preference I think...

not only that, but if u leave all of your foliage on it and let it dry. The leaves protect your trichomes during the drying process; but its a real fucking bitch to trim it after it dries with the leaves on because the leaves stick to the buds making it harder to trim them. If you trim while its freshly cut, it is super easy and gets done a lot faster at the trim work. I feel that the plant dries faster when u trim it before you hang it. Me personally i prefer to trim first then hang. Hell on my Auto's i trim them down before i even cut them down. This way makes it very easy to get the trim work done because you dont have a dead plant decaying while during the trim. With my photo's though i cut them down then i trim them up then i hang them. I dont trim them via the living plant; soley because they are just too damn big to trim while living, i do in fact defoliate about 10-15 days before the harvest of my photo's though. I do this so it saves me time as well as takes up less water due to not having the water leaves "fan leaves", it also in turn gives the plant more chance to ripen due to the fact that it doesn't have big bulky leaves blocking all of the light! Thanks for the awesome info. My first plant should be ready in a couple week so ill leave the leaves on and hang it as is, it's a small plant. I have one over 6ft tall, should I hang the whole thing or cut it into 2 pieces and hang?
I trim the plant of sunleaves and sugarleaves whilst it is still in the pot it was grown in....this allows one to put the plant on a milkcrate and sit on a chair in front of it to trim....rotate the pot as needed...makes trimming a LOT easier.

I think that the only thing that effects the quality of hash is: if you handle the TRIM TOO MUCH, as well as using a MOTORIZED TRIMMER, pretty much anything but scissors will/can ruin the quality for any kind of resin extraction; also try storing your trim in the FREEZER, so that it freezes the resin and the trichomes get brittle and break off. You will get a better return on ur extraction!
Around here one of my favorite sights and times of harvest are the strings of buds dangling from the parallel wires near the ceiling by the wood stove. Home after home it's done the same, cut the branch at each fork so you have a big bud and a smaller bud, leave the leaves on the section and hang by the branch fork. I love the sight of it when I'm welcomed into a growers home at harvest ( normally a stay away time) The warm fire, the harvest of plenty in classic form, and the merry trimmers-snip snip hear and a snip snip there and a couple of fa la las, that's how we spend the day away in the merry old land of Oz. Two buds with leaves on, hung off wires run about a foot below the ceiling-that's how we do it-you can do it any way you like, were just stuck here In Humboldt.
